Linkin Park Edges Out Trey Songz for Top Spot on Album Chart

Linkin Park and the R&B singer Trey Songz lead a wave of new releases on the latest Billboard album chart as the music industry gears up for its all-important fall sales season.

Linkin Park notches its fourth No. 1 with “A Thousand Suns” (Warner Brothers). It sold 241,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, just a hair more than the 240,000 copies Trey Songz had for his new “Passion, Pain & Pleasure” (Songbook/Atlantic). It was the best sales week of Trey Songz’s four-album career but far from Linkin Park’s best; its last record, “Minutes to Midnight,” had 623,000 in its first week out in 2007.

Eminem’s hit “Recovery” (Aftermath/Interscope) sold 89,000 copies to land at No. 3, but much of the rest of the top 10 this week is new. the country singer Jamey Johnson is No. 4 with 63,000 sales of his two-CD set “The Guitar Song” (Mercury Nashville); Robert Plant is No. 5 with “Band of Joy” (Rounder), which sold 49,000; Weezer’s “Hurley” (Epitaph) is No. 6 with 45,000; and Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of the Killers, sold 41,000 copies of his first solo album, “Flamingo” (Island), to reach No. 8.

Several artists, including Eminem, got sales boosts after appearing on MTV’s Video Music Awards last week. the most notable might be the British band Florence and the Machine, whose debut album, “Lungs” (Island), jumped 30 slots to No. 14 on the current chart, with 21,000 sales, a 165 percent increase over what it sold the week before.

Hundreds of Capitol Hill Staffers Didn’t Pay Taxes in 2010

As Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich parse the details of their individual tax returns, hundreds of Capitol Hill employees are taking taxpayer dollars to the bank without paying their share.

Internal Revenue Service data show that 3 percent of Senate staffers and more than 4 percent of House staffers owed taxes in 2010, adding up to about $10.6 million in unpaid taxes. More than 98,000 civilian federal employees were delinquent on their taxes in 2010, adding up to more than $1 billion in taxes owed, according to the IRS.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, last year introduced a bill to require federal employees to be fired if they are “seriously delinquent” on their taxes. Seriously delinquent is defined as outstanding federal tax debt for which a public lien has been filed. The bill was passed by committee in June but is still waiting for a vote from the full House.

“If you work for the federal government and you don’t pay your taxes, you should be fired,” Chaffetz said in a statement provided to FoxNews.com. “It is totally unacceptable to live on the federal payroll and not pay your taxes.  The Obama administration has totally ignored this cheating. Congress should pass my bill and hold federal workers accountable.”

Under current law, only IRS employees can be fired for not paying their federal income taxes, according to Chaffetz’s office.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., in 2010 introduced a similar bill, to make delinquent taxpayers ineligible for federal employment.

“Legislators and government employees should not be exempt from the laws they write and enforce,” Coburn said when introducing the bill. “The very nature of federal employment and the concept inherent to ‘public service’ demands those being paid by taxpayers contribute their fair share of taxes. they should lead by example.”

The number of civilian federal employees delinquent on their taxes has been on a downward trend since 2004, but the amount owed has increased significantly — from just under $600 million in 2004 to more than $1 billion in 2010.

About 2 percent of active duty military and military reservists owed a total of nearly $340 million in taxes in 2010. about 2 percent of retired civilian federal employees and almost 4 percent of military retirees owed a total of $2 billion.

Asian football’s top ten stories of 2011

It was another year full of drama, excitement and controversy in Asian football and here are the top ten stories of 2011.

      10. Afghanistan reach the final of the South Asian Cup

GettyImagesJapan’s women trumped the men in following on from their Asian Cup to win the Women’s World Cup by defeating the USA on penalties

When you are ranked 178 in the world, your historical number of wins is in single figures and the adjective ‘war-torn’ is a semi-permanent companion every time your country’s name is mentioned in the international media, you take any success you can get. Afghanistan had the best year in their football history and if things had gone a little differently, could have ended it as South Asian champions.

The Lions had never made it past the first round of the biennial meet before but stormed into the last four with comprehensive wins over Sri Lanka and Bhutan following an opening game draw against India in Delhi. then came a semi-final win over a Nepal team coached by former England international Graham Roberts to earn a final date with the hosts and favourties India. that ended in a 4-0 defeat after the sending off of the Afghan goalkeeper. It was still a great time for fans in the country.

Chinese fans are accustomed to national team heartbreak but it doesn’t get any easier. the year started with a first round elimination from the Asian Cup but what really hurt was a third successive failure to reach the final stage of qualification for the World Cup. the whys and wherefores have long been debated without offering much in the way of comfort. There is solace these days in the rise of the Chinese Super League and the money flowing into the domestic game. that may eventually help the national team add to a solitary World Cup appearance but fans will not be holding their collective breath.

      8. Growing power of Asian teams in international transfer market

Teams from the western reaches of the continent have been buying big-name stars for years though these players were usually close to retirement and happy to wind down for a couple of years.

The signing of Asamoah Gyan by Al Ain was significant. It was a case of a West Asian club’s financial power tempting a player still yet to hit his peak away from an established English Premier League club that wanted to keep him. then you have the capture of Nicolas Anelka by Shanghai Shenhua in December and the promise of similar signings to come. Asian clubs flexed their financial muscles in 2011 and an increasing amount of famous European teams can’t match such power.

      7. Indonesia shenanigans

While the Arab Spring was sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East, Indonesian football got rid of its own corrupt dictator in the shape of Nurdin Halid. the convicted criminal wanted a third term as president of the country’s FA. Even apart from the fact that he had been imprisoned while in office, the chaotic state of the domestic football scene should have been damning enough. It took a long time but eventually FIFA ruled that Nurdin could not stand again and from the chaos, a pro-reform candidate eventually took his place. While the jury is still out on whether things will be much better in Indonesian football, the recent political upheavals around the world taught that removal of a rotten leader is a vital first step.

      6. the Bahrain situation

What do you do when you get within minutes of the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and you are desperate for a debut appearance on the global stage? In their bid to qualify for 2014, Bahrain arrested some of their best players. Established internationals such as Mohamed Hubail, his brother Alaa as well as Mohamed Adnan were arrested by security forces, imprisoned and, they claim, tortured for taking part in protests at the height of the Arab Spring. They may have been released but are not yet close to a recall to the national team. Even if that happened, it is probably too late as far as 2014 is concerned. Bahrain are almost out of the running.

      5. Good news from Palestine and Lebanon

It may be cheating to have two nations occupying one slot but this is a pair that tends to make headlines for reasons other than football. In 2011 it was different. Palestine played a first ever World Cup qualifier on home soil, progressing past Afghanistan before narrowly being beaten by Thailand. Lebanon are in with a shout of the final round of the 2014 World Cup qualification thanks partly to an impressive 2-1 win over South Korea in November.

      4. Al Sadd end East Asian dominance and more besides

Al Sadd were not bad at all. They may be the most unpopular team in Asia but were also the best thing to happen to the Asian Champions League for years, upsetting entire nations on their way to the title. first came Iran. Al Sadd lost both quarter-finals against Sepahan but progressed to the last four because of an ineligible player fielded.

A controversial goal in the semi-final against Suwon Bluewings almost caused a riot but shot the tournament into headlines around the world. a penalty shootout win against Jeonbuk Motors in the final after being second best for much of the match took the trophy back to West Asia for the first time since 2005. Al Sadd then finished third at the FIFA Club World Cup ending an amazing year for a team that didn’t even qualify for the Asian Champions League in the first place and were admitted due to the expulsion of a club from Vietnam.

      3. South Korea match-fixing

Asia’s oldest professional league took a major hit in 2011 with a string of match-fixing cases that shocked a nation. over 60 players, past and present, were prosecuted for the crime, often accepting amounts that were depressingly low. for a while in spring, fresh allegations and accusations became a part of the national television news and caused at least two involved to take their own life. the KFA and the K-League reacted quickly and strictly but how effective the counter-measures were remain to be seen.

      2. Suspension of Mohamed Bin Hammam

GettyImagesMohammed Bin Hammam: a year that began with the highest of hopes ends in ignominy

This is the first half of a story that is going to dominate Asian football off the pitch for much of 2012. after nine years in the continental top job, Bin Hammam decided to shoot for the biggest post of all and in March announced that he was going to challenge FIFA president Sepp Blatter in the election due to be held in may. just before the vote, the Qatari withdrew after accusations of vote-buying. he was later banned from football by FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

Bin Hammam claims that the committee is far from impartial- a view shared by many in the game – and is determined to clear his name. Whether he succeeds or not, 2011 marked the end of Bin Hammam at the AFC.

It is good to end with football matters and it was a great year for Japan. It started with a fourth Asian Cup triumph. after a slow start the Samurai Blue came to the boil nicely and downed South Korea and Australia in the semi-final and final respectively.

In July, the women went one better and lifted the World Cup in Germany, a huge deal for Asian football. And with qualification for 2014 progressing very well, fans in Japan can look back on 2011 with considerable satisfaction.

The Effects of SEO Software on Business

There are many different factors that can affect businesses in different ways. Sometimes these effects can be beneficial, and sometimes they can be detrimental. In recent years there has been a rising popularity with businesses that involves creating a more strong internet presence. This is usually done by building and maintaining a website. Websites can help to expose your business to new customers, and it can also help you to grow your business financially as well. Building and maintaining a website is an excellent way to increase revenue, and get the word out about different products or services. With this new exploit, there is also a technique that is available to be used as well that is called search engine optimization.

This is a process that allows you to take different keywords and find the ones that are the best ones for people who are trying to find your website to use when they are using a search engine in order to find it. This process can have many different effects on a business. Most of these are beneficial, however, if the process is not done correctly, it can be detrimental, or at the very least it will have not effect on the website traffic at all.

It all begins by using the right search engine optimization software. The right software can help you with tracking your website, and it can also help with making sure that you are placing yourself in the best possible position to help your website to grow.

One of the beneficial effects of using this kind of search engine tracker software is that it helps you to stay organized. Everyone knows that it is important to stay organized so that you know what information you are looking at, and also what information that you are missing. These programs can also graph the information that you have collected so that you can show the changes of the website over time.

Another thing that should be considered is the cost of the program that you choose. This is where the old saying you get what you pay for comes into the picture, because although there are certain programs that do cost money to use, it may be beneficial to choose a program and pay for it rather than take a chance on a free program that may be less reliable.

On the other hand, doing things like stuffing keywords, not updating content, or using pictures instead of text can be detrimental, because the spiders and crawlers that are used by the search engines cannot read any of this information. It is also helpful to not that they also cannot read flash, so although using this can make your website look more visually pleasing, it can affect the rankings that the search engine gives the websites.

There are many affects that search engine optimization has on businesses. It can help them to make improvements to their marketing plans, as well as help them to gain new clients and to find out what their clients want.

AP source: Fielder and Tigers agree on 9-year deal

DETROIT –  Free agent first baseman Prince Fielder and the Detroit Tigers agreed Tuesday on a nine-year, $214 million contract that fills the AL Central champions’ need for a power hitter, a person familiar with the deal said.

          CBS first reported the agreement.

The person told the associated Press that the deal was subject to a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet complete.

Detroit boldly stepped up in the Fielder sweepstakes after the recent knee injury to star Victor Martinez. A week ago, the Tigers announced that the productive designated hitter could miss the entire season after tearing his left ACL.

The Tigers won their division by 15 games before losing in the AL championship series to Texas. Adding Fielder gives the Tigers two of the game’s premier sluggers, pairing him with Miguel Cabrera.

The move also keeps Fielder’s name in the Tigers’ family. his father, Cecil, became a big league star when he returned to the majors from Japan and hit 51 home runs with Detroit in 1990. Cecil played with the Tigers into the 1996 season.

Several teams had shown interest this winter in the 27-year-old Fielder, who had spent his entire career with Milwaukee. He visited Texas, and the Washington Nationals also got involved in the discussions.

The beefy slugger hit .299 with 38 home runs and 120 RBIs last season. He is a three-time All-Star and was the MVP of last year’s event in Phoenix.

Fielder has averaged 40 homers and 113 RBIs over the past five years. He’s also been among the most durable players in the majors, appearing in at least 157 games in each of the last six seasons.

The deal is only the fourth $200 million contract in baseball history, following Alex Rodriguez’s $275 million, 10-year contract with the New York Yankees, A-Rod’s $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas and Albert Pujols‘ $240 million, 10-year contract last month with the Los Angeles Angels.

Among current players, his $23.78 million average salary is behind only A-Rod ($27.5 million), Ryan Howard ($25 million), and Cliff Lee and Pujols ($24 million each).

Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said last week he felt finding a replacement for Martinez was a short-term problem, but he left himself some wriggle room, saying it depended who the player was.

Acquiring Fielder opens all sorts of possibilities, such as moving Cabrera to third base or having one of the two sluggers be the designated hitter.

AP Sports Writer Ronald Blum in new York contributed to this report.

Strongest Solar Storm Since 2005 Hitting Earth

              Font Size:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Space weather officials say the strongest solar storm in more than six years is bombarding Earth with radiation with more to come.

The radiation is mostly an issue for satellite disruptions and astronauts in space. It can cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes.

The Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado observed the flare Sunday at 11 p.m. EST. Physicist Doug Biesecker says the biggest concern is the radiation, which arrived on Earth an hour later. It will likely continue through Wednesday.

Biesecker said the storm’s radiation levels are considered strong but other storms have been more severe. It is the strongest level since May 2005.

Plasma ejected from the sun arrives Tuesday, but is not as strong. It can extend the visibility of auroras and disrupt the electrical grid.

Nominees For 2011 Female Athlete Of The Year

The 77th annual Sports Star of the Year awards program, presented by ROOT Sports, is Wednesday  at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle (200 University Street). Tickets are available at benaroyahall.org or by calling 206-215-4747.

Launched as the Man of the Year banquet in 1935 by late Seattle Post-Intelligencer sports editor Royal Brougham, the show grew into the P-I Sports Star of the Year program in 1977 and expanded again in the early 1990s, when the newspaper began recognizing the area’s greatest male and female sports achievers.

Following closure in March 2009 of the print P-I, one of the region’s top sports traditions was in jeopardy of ceasing.

But with the help of the Seattle Sports Commission and Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Sports Star of the Year celebrated its 75th year on the big stage at Benaroya Hall in 2009.  More than 1,000 people attended.

The program calls for the selection by voters of the Professional Sports Star of the Year, Male Sports Star of the Year, Female Sports Star of the Year, and Sports story of the Year.

A winner will be selected from five nominees for the Female Sports Star of the Year by an online ballot process that closed Friday.

Striking about Meyers is her versatility: During the 2011 outdoor season, she competed in numerous races, including 400 meters (best time of 60.49, BCS Invite), 800 meters (2:12.23, Emerald City Championships), 1,600 meters (4:46.85, 1A state championships), one mile (4:49.02, Pasco Invitational), 3,200 meters (10:18.46, Pasco Invitational), 2K Steeplechase (6:44.20) and javelin.

Meyers hasn’t just competed locally. last June, she won the 2,000-meter steeplechase on the first day of the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC. her time of 6:32.02 was a national record.

In 2010, she traveled to new York City and won the Jim Ryun Dream Mile, clocking 4:41.93 at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

In August, USA Today selected Meyers to its All-USA girls high school track team. Meyers became one of two state residents so honored (Christine Kirkwood of Othello in the javelin).

Meyers has been running competitively for five years, since she was a sixth grader in middle school.

                QUEEN UNDERWOOD, USA Boxing

Queen Underwood’s ambition is to win a gold medal at the 2012 London Games, where women’s boxing will make its Olympic debut. her passion for the gold is fueled in part by the fact that she was abused as a child and survived the ordeal by dreaming of one day doing something extraordinary.

“One day,” she told an interviewer, “I’m going to be ‘Queen of the Ring’ and nobody will ever hurt me again. one day, I won’t be 12 years old and feeling helpless; one day I’ll be strong and unstoppable. this is the dream that kept me from losing my mind in the midst of abuse and violation.”

A Garfield High School graduate who trains at Cappy’s Boxing Gym in the Central District, Underwood took another step to realizing her dream by capturing her fifth consecutive U.S. Lightweight Boxing championship at the 132-pound weight class last summer in Colorado Springs, CO, defeating Floridian Tiara Brown on points 23-21.

Underwood started boxing at 18, seven years before the sport was voted onto the Olympic calendar. International sports officials perceived boxing to be too dangerous for women, though women have suffered few serious injuries in the ring.

In 2009, the International Olympic Committee gave the sport the green light, nudged by the fact that men’s boxing was the only summer Olympic sport lacking a female counterpart.

Underwood told KOMO that when the Games arrive, she will be ready. “I’m going there with gold on my mind,” she said, “and I’m going there feeling unstoppable.”
