Trump to back a winner in Vegas
Trump card: Donald Trump was said to be on the verge of backing Newt Gingrich, before changing his endorsement to Mitt Romney. Picture: AP Source: AP
DONALD Trump is planning to endorse Mitt Romney's bid for the Republican presidential nomination today, sources have said.
The real estate mogul and reality TV show host was set to make the announcement in Las Vegas at the hotel bearing his name, with mr Romney in attendance. Nevada holds its presidential caucuses tomorrow.
The Republican officials requested anonymity to speak ahead of Trump’s official announcement.
The surprise development came hours after Newt Gingrich had informed close advisers on Wednesday night that he expected to win mr Trump’s support.
Mr Trump has played an unusually prominent role in the presidential contest since last spring, when he mused publicly about joining the Republican field. His blunt criticism of President Barack Obama and fierce warnings of a nation in decline resonated with Tea Party activists. At one point, polls showed him briefly surging to the top of the field.
Mr Trump stirred controversy and considerable criticism during that time by openly questioning the validity of mr Obama’s birth certificate, lending credence to the chorus of "birthers" who believe mr Obama was not born in the United States and thus is ineligible to be president. The fuss pushed mr Obama to release a long-form version of his birth certificate.
Mr Trump announced last May that he would not be a candidate for the Republican nomination. But he welcomed other hopefuls to his office at Trump Tower on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue for strategy sessions. mr Romney made the trek, as did former candidates Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Perry.
Mr Gingrich visited in December when he was topping polls in Iowa and nationally.
Mr Trump even took Sarah Palin out for a widely publicised pizza dinner in Times Square when she was considering a presidential bid. But the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee ultimately decided against running.
Mr Gingrich’s camp was so confident of Trump’s endorsement that those close to the former House speaker confirmed it Wednesday night for news organisations.
One of those officials said mr Trump had "sent signals" to mr Gingrich that he would support him. Today, that individual declined to elaborate on what those signals were.
Mr Trump is known for being unpredictable and the circus atmosphere surrounding his endorsement almost seemed designed to gin up interest in the event.Asked about the possible endorsement yesterday in Reno, Nevada, mr Gingrich said he had "no idea what the Donald is going to do".
"He is always interesting," mr Gingrich said of mr Trump. "and I don’t know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something."
Mr Gingrich sought mr Trump’s endorsement at a meeting in December at the real estate mogul’s Trump Tower office in Manhattan. there, mr Gingrich told reporters he had persuaded mr Trump to mentor promising children from some of New York’s poorest schools.
The former House speaker had come under fire for suggesting poor children should do janitorial chores in their schools to learn the value of work.
Mr Gingrich also agreed to appear in a Republican debate mr Trump was to host in Iowa in December. But other candidates, including frontrunner mr Romney, turned down the debate, forcing mr Trump to cancel.
Mr Trump had flirted with the idea of jumping in the presidential race as a third-party candidate but ultimately decided not to.
Appearing on CBS political news program "Face The Nation" on Sunday, mr Trump praised mr Gingrich.
"He’s got great ideas. He’s very smart, he’s very tough and he is a great debater," he said.
Mr Gingrich was pounded by mr Romney in Florida in Tuesday’s Republican primary. mr Romney is considered a heavy favourite in Nevada, a state he won when he sought the Republican nomination in 2008.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) — Two of the most common and dreaded illnesses in America may share a connection, with new research suggesting that having insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes raises your risk of developing the brain plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
After adjusting for other risk factors, the Japanese study found that people with the highest levels of fasting insulin had nearly six times the odds of having plaque deposits between nerves in the brain, compared to people with the lowest levels of fasting insulin.
Those with the highest scores on a measure of insulin resistance (where cells become less able to use insulin effectively) had about five times the odds of having brain plaques vs. those with the lowest scores on the insulin-resistance test, the study found.
In fact, “the risk of plaque-type Alzheimer’s disease pathology increases in a linear relationship with diabetes-related factors,” according to one study author, Dr. Kensuke Sasaki, an assistant professor in the department of neuropathology at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.
Results of the study appear in the Aug. 25 online issue of Neurology.
Both type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease have been rapidly increasing in incidence, so much so that experts worry the illnesses may overwhelm the health-care system in the coming years if nothing is done.
While numerous studies have found a link between cognitive decline and dementia in people with type 2 diabetes, the current study sought to determine the reason for that link.
Using autopsies from 135 Japanese adults, the researchers were able to compare if different indicators of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes correlated with the development of plaque deposits between the nerves in the brain (neuritic plaques) or neurofibrillary tangles, which are found in dying cells in the brain. Plaques and tangles are thought by many to be the two main causes of the destruction of brain tissue seen in Alzheimer’s disease.
All of those autopsied died between 1998 and 2003. In 1988, they had undergone numerous tests as part of an ongoing study on brain and heart health. The tests included an oral 2-hour glucose tolerance test, fasting blood sugar and insulin levels, and a measurement of insulin resistance using a test called homeostasis assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).
The researchers adjusted the data to control for age, sex, blood pressure, cholesterol, body-mass index, smoking, exercise and cerebrovascular disease.
They found no association between diabetes risk factors and the development of tangles. however, higher levels of blood sugar two hours after eating, high fasting insulin levels and an elevated HOMA-IR score were associated with an increased risk of developing plaques. Fasting blood sugar levels were not associated with an increased risk of plaques, according to the study.
When the researchers compared varying levels of diabetes risk factors, such as fasting insulin, they found a linear association with the development of plaques. For example, fasting insulin was broken into three groups: low, medium and high. The low group didn’t have an increased risk of plaques, while the medium group had more than twice the risk of brain plaques, and those in the high group had a six times higher risk of plaques than those in the low group.
The researchers also performed a separate analysis to see if the presence of a gene long implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (ApoE4) would have an effect on the association between diabetes risk factors and the development of plaques. it did: those with the ApoE4 gene has the strongest association between high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance and fasting insulin levels and the development of plaques.
“Research has been linking diabetes to dementia, and probably to Alzheimer’s, and this study is one more bit of evidence to say that we’d better get a handle on this,” said Dr. Richard Bergenstal, president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association.
Bergenstal said this study’s findings are likely applicable to people with both type 2 and type 1 diabetes, and possibly to those with pre-diabetes, as well.
“This study fits into a body of literature looking at the relationship between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. This area is being pretty aggressively researched for a number of reasons. Would better control of type 2 diabetes improve the cognitive fate of those with the disease, and is there some way we can intervene in glucose metabolism that might affect Alzheimer’s?” said William Thies, chief medical and scientific officer for the Alzheimer’s Association.
“if you have diabetes, it’s certainly a good idea to keep it under control while we’re sorting out the research,” Bergenstal said.
“Although we don’t know anything that can prevent Alzheimer’s disease right now, I do think there are a lot of good reasons for people to try to prevent type 2 diabetes, much of which can potentially be avoided with regular physical activity and weight maintenance,” said Thies. “Preventing or controlling diabetes is good for all kinds of reasons, and also because it might contribute to your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.”

IRS Announces Free File Limits
By Laura Saunders
Getty Images
With this year’s tax-filing season up and running, the Internal Revenue Service once again wants taxpayers to be aware of IRS Free File, a program gives people with low and moderate incomes access to tax-prep software and provides a wide range of “fillable forms” to those earning more.
Taxpayers who access Free File products through the IRS’s website or authorized kiosks in 29 states aren’t charged for preparing or e-filing their federal tax returns. The program, now in its 10th year, is a joint venture between the IRS and a consortium of 14 tax-software companies, including Intuit (maker of TurboTax) and H&R Block.
Free File provides all taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less with user-friendly tax-prep software. By mandate, the program covers the bottom 70% of taxpayers; perhaps because of recent economic turmoil, this year’s limit is, for the first time, lower than the previous year’s limit, which was $58,000.
Taxpayers who qualify on income grounds are free to itemize or not, says Free File Alliance director Tim Hugo. “We keep improving the programs, and this year we support the 29 core forms taxpayers use most often,” he says. The list includes Schedule D for reporting capital gains and Schedule C for business profit and losses.
Hugo cautions, however, that not all consortium members provide software for every taxpayer who qualifies. “One may cover only up to $52,000 of income, and others may not work in all states, but there is a program for every taxpayer,” he says.
Options may be found here, and there is a “find a company” tool. The service is also available in Spanish.
For taxpayers with more than $57,000 of adjusted gross income, the Free File Alliance offers “Fillable Forms” at the IRS website. These forms check some math calculations and provide links to some IRS publications, but they do not use the question-and-answer format commonly found in tax software.
“Fillable forms are much more fitting for those who feel comfortable preparing their own taxes,” said Hugo. For a list of forms, go here.
For what it’s worth: In 2009 the IRS surveyed taxpayers who use Free File, and over 95% said they found it easy to use and would recommend it.

Linkin Park Edges Out Trey Songz for Top Spot on Album Chart
Linkin Park and the R&B singer Trey Songz lead a wave of new releases on the latest Billboard album chart as the music industry gears up for its all-important fall sales season.
Linkin Park notches its fourth No. 1 with “A Thousand Suns” (Warner Brothers). It sold 241,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, just a hair more than the 240,000 copies Trey Songz had for his new “Passion, Pain & Pleasure” (Songbook/Atlantic). It was the best sales week of Trey Songz’s four-album career but far from Linkin Park’s best; its last record, “Minutes to Midnight,” had 623,000 in its first week out in 2007.
Eminem’s hit “Recovery” (Aftermath/Interscope) sold 89,000 copies to land at No. 3, but much of the rest of the top 10 this week is new. the country singer Jamey Johnson is No. 4 with 63,000 sales of his two-CD set “The Guitar Song” (Mercury Nashville); Robert Plant is No. 5 with “Band of Joy” (Rounder), which sold 49,000; Weezer’s “Hurley” (Epitaph) is No. 6 with 45,000; and Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of the Killers, sold 41,000 copies of his first solo album, “Flamingo” (Island), to reach No. 8.
Several artists, including Eminem, got sales boosts after appearing on MTV’s Video Music Awards last week. the most notable might be the British band Florence and the Machine, whose debut album, “Lungs” (Island), jumped 30 slots to No. 14 on the current chart, with 21,000 sales, a 165 percent increase over what it sold the week before.

Asian football’s top ten stories of 2011
It was another year full of drama, excitement and controversy in Asian football and here are the top ten stories of 2011.
10. Afghanistan reach the final of the South Asian Cup
GettyImagesJapan’s women trumped the men in following on from their Asian Cup to win the Women’s World Cup by defeating the USA on penalties
When you are ranked 178 in the world, your historical number of wins is in single figures and the adjective ‘war-torn’ is a semi-permanent companion every time your country’s name is mentioned in the international media, you take any success you can get. Afghanistan had the best year in their football history and if things had gone a little differently, could have ended it as South Asian champions.
The Lions had never made it past the first round of the biennial meet before but stormed into the last four with comprehensive wins over Sri Lanka and Bhutan following an opening game draw against India in Delhi. then came a semi-final win over a Nepal team coached by former England international Graham Roberts to earn a final date with the hosts and favourties India. that ended in a 4-0 defeat after the sending off of the Afghan goalkeeper. It was still a great time for fans in the country.
Chinese fans are accustomed to national team heartbreak but it doesn’t get any easier. the year started with a first round elimination from the Asian Cup but what really hurt was a third successive failure to reach the final stage of qualification for the World Cup. the whys and wherefores have long been debated without offering much in the way of comfort. There is solace these days in the rise of the Chinese Super League and the money flowing into the domestic game. that may eventually help the national team add to a solitary World Cup appearance but fans will not be holding their collective breath.
8. Growing power of Asian teams in international transfer market
Teams from the western reaches of the continent have been buying big-name stars for years though these players were usually close to retirement and happy to wind down for a couple of years.
The signing of Asamoah Gyan by Al Ain was significant. It was a case of a West Asian club’s financial power tempting a player still yet to hit his peak away from an established English Premier League club that wanted to keep him. then you have the capture of Nicolas Anelka by Shanghai Shenhua in December and the promise of similar signings to come. Asian clubs flexed their financial muscles in 2011 and an increasing amount of famous European teams can’t match such power.
7. Indonesia shenanigans
While the Arab Spring was sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East, Indonesian football got rid of its own corrupt dictator in the shape of Nurdin Halid. the convicted criminal wanted a third term as president of the country’s FA. Even apart from the fact that he had been imprisoned while in office, the chaotic state of the domestic football scene should have been damning enough. It took a long time but eventually FIFA ruled that Nurdin could not stand again and from the chaos, a pro-reform candidate eventually took his place. While the jury is still out on whether things will be much better in Indonesian football, the recent political upheavals around the world taught that removal of a rotten leader is a vital first step.
6. the Bahrain situation
What do you do when you get within minutes of the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and you are desperate for a debut appearance on the global stage? In their bid to qualify for 2014, Bahrain arrested some of their best players. Established internationals such as Mohamed Hubail, his brother Alaa as well as Mohamed Adnan were arrested by security forces, imprisoned and, they claim, tortured for taking part in protests at the height of the Arab Spring. They may have been released but are not yet close to a recall to the national team. Even if that happened, it is probably too late as far as 2014 is concerned. Bahrain are almost out of the running.
5. Good news from Palestine and Lebanon
It may be cheating to have two nations occupying one slot but this is a pair that tends to make headlines for reasons other than football. In 2011 it was different. Palestine played a first ever World Cup qualifier on home soil, progressing past Afghanistan before narrowly being beaten by Thailand. Lebanon are in with a shout of the final round of the 2014 World Cup qualification thanks partly to an impressive 2-1 win over South Korea in November.
4. Al Sadd end East Asian dominance and more besides
Al Sadd were not bad at all. They may be the most unpopular team in Asia but were also the best thing to happen to the Asian Champions League for years, upsetting entire nations on their way to the title. first came Iran. Al Sadd lost both quarter-finals against Sepahan but progressed to the last four because of an ineligible player fielded.
A controversial goal in the semi-final against Suwon Bluewings almost caused a riot but shot the tournament into headlines around the world. a penalty shootout win against Jeonbuk Motors in the final after being second best for much of the match took the trophy back to West Asia for the first time since 2005. Al Sadd then finished third at the FIFA Club World Cup ending an amazing year for a team that didn’t even qualify for the Asian Champions League in the first place and were admitted due to the expulsion of a club from Vietnam.
3. South Korea match-fixing
Asia’s oldest professional league took a major hit in 2011 with a string of match-fixing cases that shocked a nation. over 60 players, past and present, were prosecuted for the crime, often accepting amounts that were depressingly low. for a while in spring, fresh allegations and accusations became a part of the national television news and caused at least two involved to take their own life. the KFA and the K-League reacted quickly and strictly but how effective the counter-measures were remain to be seen.
2. Suspension of Mohamed Bin Hammam
GettyImagesMohammed Bin Hammam: a year that began with the highest of hopes ends in ignominy
This is the first half of a story that is going to dominate Asian football off the pitch for much of 2012. after nine years in the continental top job, Bin Hammam decided to shoot for the biggest post of all and in March announced that he was going to challenge FIFA president Sepp Blatter in the election due to be held in may. just before the vote, the Qatari withdrew after accusations of vote-buying. he was later banned from football by FIFA’s Ethics Committee.
Bin Hammam claims that the committee is far from impartial- a view shared by many in the game – and is determined to clear his name. Whether he succeeds or not, 2011 marked the end of Bin Hammam at the AFC.
It is good to end with football matters and it was a great year for Japan. It started with a fourth Asian Cup triumph. after a slow start the Samurai Blue came to the boil nicely and downed South Korea and Australia in the semi-final and final respectively.
In July, the women went one better and lifted the World Cup in Germany, a huge deal for Asian football. And with qualification for 2014 progressing very well, fans in Japan can look back on 2011 with considerable satisfaction.

The Effects of SEO Software on Business
There are many different factors that can affect businesses in different ways. Sometimes these effects can be beneficial, and sometimes they can be detrimental. In recent years there has been a rising popularity with businesses that involves creating a more strong internet presence. This is usually done by building and maintaining a website. Websites can help to expose your business to new customers, and it can also help you to grow your business financially as well. Building and maintaining a website is an excellent way to increase revenue, and get the word out about different products or services. With this new exploit, there is also a technique that is available to be used as well that is called search engine optimization.
This is a process that allows you to take different keywords and find the ones that are the best ones for people who are trying to find your website to use when they are using a search engine in order to find it. This process can have many different effects on a business. Most of these are beneficial, however, if the process is not done correctly, it can be detrimental, or at the very least it will have not effect on the website traffic at all.
It all begins by using the right search engine optimization software. The right software can help you with tracking your website, and it can also help with making sure that you are placing yourself in the best possible position to help your website to grow.
One of the beneficial effects of using this kind of search engine tracker software is that it helps you to stay organized. Everyone knows that it is important to stay organized so that you know what information you are looking at, and also what information that you are missing. These programs can also graph the information that you have collected so that you can show the changes of the website over time.
Another thing that should be considered is the cost of the program that you choose. This is where the old saying you get what you pay for comes into the picture, because although there are certain programs that do cost money to use, it may be beneficial to choose a program and pay for it rather than take a chance on a free program that may be less reliable.
On the other hand, doing things like stuffing keywords, not updating content, or using pictures instead of text can be detrimental, because the spiders and crawlers that are used by the search engines cannot read any of this information. It is also helpful to not that they also cannot read flash, so although using this can make your website look more visually pleasing, it can affect the rankings that the search engine gives the websites.
There are many affects that search engine optimization has on businesses. It can help them to make improvements to their marketing plans, as well as help them to gain new clients and to find out what their clients want.
