Did anyone see the live breaking news a few minutes ago? Ambulance rushed to Obama's?

Regular TV programming was interrupted in my area for breaking news. they said an ambulance has been rushed to where Obama is staying in Hawaii for a personal matter. That is pretty much all they know at this time. Has anyone heard anymore about this? I know I am not Obama's biggest fan, but I do hope that everything is ok with him and his family. does anyone know what is going on? Thanks.

"CNN is reporting that a child who is a family friend of the Obamas suffered minor injuries at the first family's vacation rental in Kailua"

He was on the golf course and cut his game short to return to the rental home when told about this…so it wasn't him.

Yes. Supposedly a child of a friend staying with the Obamas has minor injuries due to a surfboard/surfing.

CNN said that it was a family friend who sustained a "minor" injury. No other details than that.

Said that it's some kid at the Obama's house – not one of his kids – that sustained minor injuries, maybe from a surfing accident. Sounds like it was no big deal.

Fortunately it's a minor injury–kids keep adults super busy. It's also kind of funny to see a super high speed presidential motorcade respond to a kid's injury.

Wonder how family life is a nice change for the Secret Service.

I had not heard about this. (LOL – was too busy yahoo q/a ing)

I searched it and could only find the same info. that the first answerer gave. Thanks for the heads up.

Quick. Connies need to tune to Fox to check on how to think about and spin this.

Unfortunately, Obama is safe. the Republic should be so lucky. Maybe next time the CIA, Mossad, and the US Chamber of Commerce will be a little more on the ball.

I sure hope its not any more terrorists

Were they hunting with Cheney?

Perhaps Michelle took a golf club to O?

AP just says that Obama was golfing…..and an ambulance went speeding by to where he is staying……didn't involve him personally…

i also dont know the details, but I do hope that everything is ok with him and his family too.
i will try to get it from all of your

This may be a case of Child Abuse.

    Focus on dads

Being a dad is a big job.

It’s always been an important job, but it seems even more important today. not only do working moms really need dads to be more involved with child-rearing, but research consistently is showing that a father’s love and attention makes a huge difference in children developing into healthy, happy adults.

Just in time for Fathers Day, a series of activities scheduled in Lawrence this week is aimed at helping local fathers embrace their important role.

A number of events and declarations sponsored by Dads of Douglas County will lead up to a community festival Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with games, contests, food and a motorcycle display.

Dads of Douglas County, a new support group, is one of several ongoing local efforts for fathers. Classes on “Conscious Fathering” are being offered at least monthly and a “Daddy & Me” play group has been formed. More information on Dads of Douglas County is available at WellCommons.com.

Offering support and advice to one another may come more naturally for moms, but it’s good that dads are giving it a try. some dads are real naturals, but others may not feel they’re getting the hang of it. even those who are doing a good job can gain confidence in their fathering skills by interacting with other men facing the same issues and challenges.

In Monday’s Journal-World, Rich Minder, one of the Dads of Douglas County organizers, cited some examples of why involved fathers are so important to children. they help bring financial stability to a family, but they also contribute to the physical and emotional well being of their children. just being there helps children, but having a good relationship with those children helps even more. Minder cited research at Columbia University that found children living in two-parent households, were 68 percent more likely to smoke, drink or use drugs if they had a poor relationship with their father.

Many other benefits of fatherhood can be found at www.fatherhood.gov, the website for the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse, which urges fathers to “Take time to be a dad today.”

Many fathers will tell you that being a dad is the most important role they have played in their life. It’s nice to see that role recognized and supported through local and national initiatives.

Taking Mother's Day to Capitol Hill and Beyond

Most of us are grateful to the loving mothers who reared us, taught us right from wrong and gave us the strength, hope and courage to be the adults we are today. And while there are certainly those among us who had painful childhoods or strained relationships with our own mothers (thankfully, I am not one of those), overall, we have it pretty good in the United States.

Around here, Mother’s Day generally involves Sunday brunch on a late-spring afternoon — a time when mothers and their children can socialize, bond and do their part to keep greeting card companies and florists in business. as a mom who has a great relationship with my mother and with my daughter (and support from a sweet husband and a wonderful father), I love celebrating Mother’s Day with my family; it’s an annual tradition I look forward to every year.

As an activist, however, I also feel strongly that Mother’s Day should be a time to take stock of what each of us can do to make things better for all mothers and children, not only here at home, but in other parts of the world. That’s why I’ll be on Capitol Hill next week to ask my congresspeople to consider three important areas that affect women and children: preventing child marriage, improving maternal health and ending global hunger.

It may seem silly to talk about child marriage in our country, where the average age at first marriage for females is 26. But in places like Niger or Yemen, where the average age for marriage is around 18, it’s a different story. While 18 may not sound too young to get married, keep in mind that the number is an average, meaning that a great number of girls in their early teens — even as young as eight or nine years old — are being married off to men who are often twice their age and have other wives. can you imagine giving your 5th grade daughter away to a 30-year-old man? several horrible stories have surfaced recently about child brides and deaths because of complications resulting from sexual intercourse and childbirth. True, some traditions are so ingrained in cultures that making progress against them is a slow process. Even though child marriage is outlawed in many developing countries, the practice continues due to a variety of reasons, including the low value placed on the lives of girls and a lack of resources to enforce the laws. But when our government here at home takes a stand against practices such as child marriage in other parts of the world, it benefits everyone.

No matter in which country they marry, girls who marry before 18 are twice as likely to report being beaten, slapped or threatened by their husbands as girls who marry later in life. in the developing world, marriage often ends a girl’s educational opportunities, lowering her future economic and personal prospects. Hunger and poverty are key factors in continuing the vicious cycle of early marriage. And, get this: whether they’re married or not, girls between the ages of 10 and 14 are five times more likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth than women ages 20 to 24. did you know that pregnancy is the leading cause of death worldwide for women ages 15-19?

So, while we grapple with which shoes to wear to Mother’s Day brunch, other mothers and children are facing much more life-altering issues. I’m no “Debbie Downer,” but as you are remembering and appreciating your mother this weekend, please also think of the mothers around the world whose lives could be greatly improved if we each do our part to better care for women and children everywhere.

Career colleges good for economy – Harris N. Miller – POLITICO.com

President Barack Obama has called for the United States to produce more college graduates than any other nation by the year 2020. you can almost hear the skeptics questioning whether our educational system can meet the challenge.

But this goal is essential for the recovery of our struggling work force and battered economy. Unemployment is hovering around 10 percent, and working Americans need new skills to succeed in new and better jobs. Our companies — and our country — are competing in an unforgiving global economy in which increasing the competence of workers and the quality of products and services can mean the difference between recovery and continuing recession.

Though the goal is achievable, we as a nation won’t be able to meet it unless we think imaginatively and act innovatively. According to one study, to graduate a higher percentage of adults with college degrees by 2025 than our economic rivals, the United States will need to graduate an additional 63 million students. under current conditions, according to experts, we will fall short by 16 million.

The nation’s institutions of higher education confront big challenges that undermine their ability to meet this goal. States are slashing funding for higher education, forcing many public colleges and universities to cut programs and staff. The endowments of private liberal-arts colleges are sinking along with the stock market, which pressures the schools to focus on recruiting students from higher-income families. Beset by the same budget cuts as four-year public institutions, community colleges are turning students away or creating multiyear waiting lists for specialized programs.

As a result, more people are looking to private-sector career colleges. Numbering almost 3,000, these colleges currently educate more than 2.75 million students — roughly 10 percent of the nation’s higher education students.
