NY/NJ has it down cold as Super Bowl XLVIII host

IRVING, Texas — if you build it, they will come — wearing winter coats.

The New Meadowlands Stadium, the $1.6 billion jewel co-owned by the New York Giants and Jets, will host the 2014 Super Bowl, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday afternoon at the league’s spring meeting.

“It’s a historic moment for the league,” Goodell said.

Saying that New York is a unique market, Goodell added: “It will be a great experience for our fans. it will be a great experience for the NFL.”

The league’s 32 owners, undaunted by the prospect of a wintry championship game, awarded Super Bowl XLVIII to the New York/New Jersey region after also considering bids from Tampa and South Florida, both traditional sites. South Florida and Tampa have hosted the Super Bowl 10 and four times, respectively.

Super Cold Host

The projected date for the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl is Feb. 2 — although that could change depending on the schedule. Here’s a Weather.com breakdown of that day:

ABC: 2014 Game Weather Forecast

It took four rounds of secret balloting to determine the host. New York/New Jersey won by a simple majority over Tampa. South Florida was eliminated after the second ballot.

The official tag line of the New York/New Jersey bid was “Make some History,” and it did. it will be the first open-air stadium in a cold-weather region to host a Super Bowl. In their presentation to the membership, the Jets and Giants reps showed a video that included clips from historic cold-weather games, including Adam Vinatieri’s forever field goal for the Patriots in the 2001 divisional playoffs in Foxborough, Mass. — aka “The Snow Bowl” and “The Tuck Rule Game.”

“An old-school matchup in a new-school stadium,” the voice-over says.

There could be a record-low temperature at kickoff. The current record is 39 degrees in 1972 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, and that would be considered a warm February day in East Rutherford, N.J.

There’s never been snow in a Super Bowl game and that could happen, too.

“Obviously it will be cold, but that’s what playing football is all about,” Giants quarterback Eli Manning told Fox News Channel’s “Studio B with Shepard Smith.” “I’ve been in the Super Bowl and I’ve been to a couple of Super Bowls and if you’re not in it, the Super Bowl is an event and it’s kinda a place to be and there’s no better place to be than New York City for that vibe and that atmosphere.”

The average temperature range for the Meadowlands area during February is 24 to 40 degrees, with several inches of rain, according to the bid documents. Remember, the game kicks off after sunset in the Eastern time zone, so temperatures would be dropping throughout the night.

Planners have factored it all in. They’re plotting giveaways to warm hands and seats, having hundreds of folks ready to shovel away snow and anything else they can do to make the experience more than just bearable.

Jets owner Woody Johnson cracked, “I like doing things for the first time … I hope it snows.”

It could be the last cold play for a long time, as the league made this a onetime exemption to its 50-degree rule.

“People talk about the weather, but, you know, this is football, not beach volleyball,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the NFL Network. he said his city welcomed the chance to host its share of a worldwide event and noted the Sept. 11 attacks.

“America came to the rescue of New York, and that’s something I think that New Yorkers have never forgotten,” Bloomberg said. “This is a little bit of our chance to say thank you.”

Meadowlands CEO Mark Lamping told the owners, via the NFL Network, “This region has hosted every big event — except the Super Bowl.” Lamping described their plans to integrate the Super Bowl into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and Fashion Week.

Organizers expect the 2014 Super Bowl to generate approximately $550 million for the local economy. While there will be no direct financial benefit to the two local teams, the Super Bowl will help the Giants and Jets sell the naming rights to the stadium. that could be worth an estimated $500 million.

The two teams will have access to 109 of the 219 club suites in the 82,500-seat stadium, and those will be distributed to their suite holders. But the money goes directly to the league. The Giants and Jets will split 6.2 percent of the overall ticket allotment. Because two teams are hosting, more hometown fans than usual will be left in the cold. Typically, the host city gets 5 percent.

Johnson wasted no time in raising the possibility of a Jets-Giants showdown in four years.

“We’ll try to be in that Super Bowl together,” he said, then turned to Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch. “Am I right?”

Giants co-owner John Mara thanked his fellow owners “for having the guts to want to make some history.”

He credited Johnson for hatching the idea in 2005, when the two teams agreed to share the new stadium.

“Woody started pushing the idea about four years ago, and he was absolutely relentless,” Mara said.

Johnson said: “I was born in New Brunswick, N.J. to be a Jersey boy and to bring something like this — to be involved in something this big — is a tremendous thing for all the people that live in our area.”

There are three possible dates for the game in 2014 — Feb. 2, 9, 16. it depends on the structure of the 2013 season.

Before it gets to the Meadowlands, the Super Bowl will be held in Dallas (2011), Indianapolis (2012) and New Orleans (2013).

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder indicated he’d like the event in his 90,000-seat stadium as well.

“It’s great,” he said. “But it’s warmer I Washington DC and you can quote me on that”

Said Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones: “Because it’s the Giants and the Jets and New York, I can reconsile it. We can have that game decided by the ways the teams could get there — in the elements. I think the fact we have such a great fan base there makes it work.”

“I think it’s a unique idea,” said New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson. “New York is a unique place. That’s what it’s all about.”

The Tampa organizers, in their presentation, used Tampa-area resident Dick Vitale of ESPN to extol the virtues of his adopted hometown.

“Vote for Tampa, bay-bee!” he implored in the video.

Vitale was born and raised in New Jersey, mere minutes from the new Meadowlands Stadium.

Tampa officials said they were informed they finished a very close second to New York, but said they were not given an official tally of the vote.

“Under normal circumstances, we probably would have walked away with the trophy,” said Sandy MacKinnon of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl bid committee. “But the NFL was interested in making history with New York City and a new stadium. I think the odds were stacked against the traditional sunshine climate.”

Although Goodell has been viewed by some as steering the Super Bowl to New York, Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-chairman Bryan Glazer said he’s not pointing fingers.

“We gave New York a good fight,” Glazer said. “I congratulate New York on their efforts and wish them a great Super Bowl.

“This has gotten us well-positioned for getting another Super Bowl in Tampa. The Tampa Bay area is a great area for the Super Bowl and the owners know it.”

Glazer said Tampa Bay officials likely will bid for the 2015 or 2016 Super Bowl, but no final decision has been made.

Mara tried to imagine how his late father, Wellington Mara, might have reacted to New York getting the Super Bowl.

“I think he would’ve thought we’ve come a long way since the Polo Grounds in 1925,” Mara said in an NFL Network interview immediately after the announcement.

Chad Johnson Changes His Last Name to Ocho Cinco

CINCINNATI — Maybe receiver Chad Johnson can go by the name that his head coach hates.

The Cincinnati Bengals receiver has legally changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco in Broward County, Fla., a switch that became official this week. Johnson, who lives in Miami, didn’t return a message left on his cell phone Friday night.

“It’s something I don’t think anyone has ever done before,” he told the team’s Web site. “Have I ever had a reason for why I do what I do? I’m having fun.”

Two years ago, Johnson gave himself the moniker — a reference in Spanish to his No. 85 — and put it on the back of his uniform before a game. Quarterback Carson Palmer ripped it off before the kickoff. After the season, coach Marvin Lewis — who dislikes Johnson’s attention-getting stunts — referred to the receiver as “Ocho Psycho.”

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the Bengals had no comment on the matter.

Johnson has been a concern for the Bengals this season. He unsuccessfully lobbied for a trade in the offseason, threatening to sit out if he didn’t get his way. when the Bengals refused, he relented and showed up for minicamp, but complained that his right ankle was bothering him.

He had bone spurs removed from the ankle and was limited at the start of training camp. In the second preseason game, he landed awkwardly and temporarily dislocated his left shoulder. Johnson is wearing a harness and expects to play in the season opener against Baltimore.

Facebook Users' Verdict On Redesign: Hate! – CBS News

I wonder how many people have the guts to leave facebook now though. It’s woven itself so deeply into the communications landscape of most people’s lives that extricating yourself from it after investing all that time and effort into uploading photos and adding “friends” is like committing social suicide. and I should know because I got so fed up of facebook I closed my account last month.

Since then I have told my friends if they want to contact me they should email or phone or actually meet me and REAL life has been so much more rewarding.

In addition to this I have set up www.myrealwall.com where people can still post on my wall, but with a twist.

Instead of posting on my facebook wall, if people want to post on my wall now, they actually have to write me a REAL post i.e. a letter and put a stamp on it and send it to my house. I then take their post, read it and stick it on my REAL wall, which then gets photographed every day and posted on the net.

This little social experiment has proved to be quite a neat little filter and I’ve noticed that the spam I receive from friends has effectively been cut to zero and I have not been bitten by a zombie since I started, although I’ve had a couple of pokes from friends, who have actually made the effort to come to my house and poke me in REAL life.

It hurts.

It’s a strange old place facebook. People will whinge about how much they hate it, the new design etc. but when it comes down to let’s see how many facebookers do more than complain and put their money where their mouth is and actually LEAVE facebook as a result.

Does AT&T have iPhone exclusivity until 2012?

Rumors that a VerizoniPhone is in the offing are swirling again.

Tuesday morning a report surfaced that a company called Landor Associates is working on a branding campaign for the Verizon iPhone. that would makes some sense in accordance with a report earlier this year that an Apple contract manufacturer is working on a CDMA version of the iPhone, which is the network that Verizon uses in the U.S.

But how does that jibe with Apple signing a five-year exclusive contract with AT&T? USA Today originally reported the contract length in 2007, which would keep the iPhone away from other U.S. carriers until 2012 at the earliest. Engadget recently dug up court documents from 2008 in which Apple reiterates the exclusivity agreementwith AT&T that was previously published.

That would seem to imply there are still two years until Verizon could possibly offer the iPhone. but maybe not. It’s 2010, and a lot has happened since 2007. when the contract was signed, AT&T took a chance on Apple’s phone. though it’s been a runaway success, that wasn’t guaranteed at the time for Apple, a company that had no demonstrated expertise in the area of smartphones.

The situation has evolved since then. Apple has sold more than 42 million phones worldwide, which has helped inflate AT&T’s subscriber numbers. but the wireless provider has struggled with the extra traffic on its network, forcing Apple to publicly defend its carrier partner, but privately have discussions with it about working out the problem.

It’s very possible that the terms of the contract between Apple and AT&T have changed since the original five-year agreement. Does it mean Apple has canceled the contract two years early? Perhaps. but we don’t really know. There was a hint that AT&T made some concessions to Apple, however, when theiPad was introduced.

The iPad 3G is also tied to AT&T in the U.S. but the terms were surprisingly different than the plan customers need to agree to for the iPhone. The iPad 3G offers optional, month-to-month data plans through AT&T, no contract necessary. and the prices were legitimately good: $15 for 250MB per month or $30 for unlimited data use for a month. did AT&T agree to this as a last-ditch effort to keep Apple from running into the arms of Verizon? again, we don’t know.

The only thing Apple will really say publicly about additional carriers is in broad terms on earnings calls. COO Tim Cook has said two different times that though Apple has seen increased sales in countries where it has added a secondary carrier, it doesn’t mean the results would be the same in every country.

“In each case we’ve done that, we’ve seen unit growth accelerate and market share improve,” Cook said in April. “But that doesn’t mean we view that formula works in every single case. That’s our learning so far, but we think very carefully at the country level to conclude what’s in our best interest.”

That could be Cook avoiding giving any real hints about Apple’s plans. or it could be the sign that Apple has plenty of room to renegotiate its carrier contracts.

Does AT&T have iPhone exclusivity until 2012?

    Google Chrome Speed Tests

    Science & Technology

These speed tests were filmed at actual web page rendering times. if you’re interested in the technical details, read on!Equipment used: – Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed- Monitor – 24″ Asus: we had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process.- Camera: Phantom v640 High Speed Camera at 1920 x 1080, films up to 2700 fps”Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? and why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?”Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top.”Why does the top one third of the page appear first on the weather.com page load?”Sometimes only half the buffer gets filled before the video card sends its buffer over to the LCD panel. This is because Chrome on Windows uses GDI to draw, which does not do v-sync.”The screen wipes are so smooth – how was that achieved?”The screen wipes up in a gradated wipe because LCD pixels take around 10ms to flip and gradually change color.more filming details below:Chrome Browser vs. Potato:we used a version of the web page allrecipes.com that is accessible when logged in. about four hours into the Potato Gun shoot we decided to use a locally loaded version of the web page to enable more precise synchronization with the potato gun. we finally got the shot we were hoping for after 51 takes.Chrome Browser vs. Sound:we loaded an artist page from Pandora.com, a streaming internet radio service directly off the web on a 15Mbps internet connection.Chrome Browser vs. Lightning:we used a locally loaded version of weather.com that was legally approved for use in this video (and all the standard website permissions procedures that goes into making videos!)While we had a super fast 15Mbps internet connection in the studio, any live internet connection introduces quite a bit of variability. to run speed tests on page rendering times, saving locally and loading from the local disk can help reduce this variability. For behind-the-scenes footage of how this video was made:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oarMXGq3gI
