Ted Koppel Mourns Son: Andrew Koppel Found Dead in New York

Andrew Koppel was found dead in a new York City apartment on may 31, 2010. His father, Ted Koppel says he and his wife will mourn him for the rest of their lives. Read about it below and see a photo and video.

Ted Koppel Mourns Son

Former ABC ‘Nightline’ News Anchor Ted Koppel and his wife, Grace Anne Dorney Koppel, have issued a brief statement regarding the death of their son, Andrew Koppel.

Our son, Andrew, was a brilliant, caring man, whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives.

Ted and Grace Koppel have four children, Andrew, 40-years-old, was their only son.

Koppel was found dead in a new York City apartment after a day long drinking binge. Koppel met Russel Wimberly at Smith’s Bar & Restaurant, a Hells Kitchen bar. The two had some drinks together. Wimberly ended up taking Koppel to a friends apartment because. The friend, Belinda Caban, said that Koppel could barely walk and ‘wasn’t making any sense’. She told Wimberly to put him to bed to sleep it off. They put him in one of the bedrooms in the small apartment and checked on him during the night. About 1:30 a.m., they report that they couldn’t get him to respond to them. At that point they called 911, but it was too late. Emergency workers estimate he had been dead for about 4 hours by the time they were called.

Even though numerous friends have said that they never saw Koppel take a drink, he is thought to have had a long-time alcohol abuse problem.

Koppel lived in Queens, new York with his girlfriend Ilona Lieberman. The couple have a two-year-old daughter and Ilona is pregnant with their second child. he was appointed attorney for the city Housing Authority’s civil litigation division in 2001 and resigned the post in 2008. he graduated from Georgetown Law School.

The cause of death has yet to be determined. an autopsy was performed on Monday, but it can take up to weeks to get the results of toxicology tests. Police do not suspect foul play.

One doesn’t want to even imagine what it is like to lose a child. our sympathy goes out to Ted Koppel as he mourns his sons death.

Are Sports Drinks Good for You?

Years ago, water was the only thing the average athlete took to quench thirst. Today, there are different sports drinks looking for an audience. They come in various shapes, colors, and sizes. But they all promise one thing: to give you “energy” and “power” to perform better and play harder.

The first sports drink was invented in 1965. At that time, University of Florida researchers were looking for something to replace the sweat lost by members of the Florida State Gators football team.

“The scientists knew that playing football under the hot Florida sun can cause substantial fluid loss. The new formula was designed to prevent dehydration. It was also supposed to supply carbohydrates to the players’ muscles and to replace their electrolytes – important minerals such as sodium that are lost through sweat,” according to the editors of Consumer Reports.

When the Gators went on a winning streak, observers credited their success to Gatorade as the formula was called. By 1967, that sports drink was introduced to consumers and it remains the market leader today.

It wasn’t long before other sports drinks flooded the US market with sales of over $1 billion. At present, about 20 companies in the United States alone have their own special performance drinks with familiar names like Gatorade and Powerade competing with the lesser-known energy drinks like Blue Thunder (which happens to be pink) and Exceed.

Of course, people aren’t buying them for taste. Tests made by Consumer Reports on popular brands show that many sports drinks taste bad – the reason perhaps why manufacturers are adding more sugar and less sodium to new products. Of all the sports drinks, those that are protein-packed or vitamin-enriched seem to have the most problems when it comes to taste.

“Had we rated sports drinks as we usually rate foods and beverages, none would have scored better than fair. One drawback was their candy-like flavor, which was more similar to an orange or lemon-lime lollipop than real fruit. The electrolytes in these drinks give them unpleasant off tastes: most tasted slightly salty, bitter, and astringent, and left a metallic aftertaste,” according to taste-testers at Consumer Reports.

Athletes and other people, however, buy these drinks because they believe these will help them perform better and improve stamina. After all, who can argue with basketball star Michael Jordan who reportedly received $18 million to endorse Gatorade? If Mike drinks it, shouldn’t we too?

But does science support these claims? Can sports drinks really make a difference or are you better off with plain water instead? Let’s examine the evidence.

“The more familiar sports drinks generally contain simple carbohydrates, water, and a little sodium and potassium. You’re not likely to morph into Arnold Schwarzenegger or Michael Jordan by drinking them, but nutritionists say they can help replace energy burned and water lost during an hour or more of rigorous exercise on the soccer field or during a long-distance swim, run or bike ride. They provide some readily available energy if consumed a few minutes before a workout,” said the editors of On Health magazine.

So if a kid runs straight to the soccer field after school, he or she may be better off with the carbohydrates found in Gatorade or Powerade. In that particular instance, the body’s energy is low and a good sports drink can remedy that. But that’s about as good as they get. (Next: Can sports drinks effectively replace sweat?)

Can Sports Drinks Effectively Replace Sweat?

Manufacturers claim sports drinks effectively replace lost sweat. Perspiration, as you know, is the body’s way of cooling itself. In hot weather, you could lose as much as a quart or two of water in an hour.

As you sweat, the heart works harder, your body temperature drops, and your performance declines. Unless this fluid is replaced, you could end up dehydrated even before you’re thirsty and suffer from headaches and dizziness, lapse into a coma and die.

Since sports drinks contain sodium and glucose, they are said to replace fluids more effectively than water and are quickly absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream. That claim is trumpeted by Gatorade which supposedly “works 30 percent faster than water.” The basis for this catchy phrase is a study published in the American Journal of Physiology.

In that study, exercise physiologist Carl V. Gisolfi and his colleagues at the University of Iowa tested how well seven volunteers absorbed a six percent carbohydrate solution with electrolytes and distilled water. They found that the carbo solution (which was similar to Gatorade) was absorbed 30 percent faster.

That should have put everything in place except for one thing: the solution was infused directly into the small intestine of the volunteers. It never passed the stomach. Unless you happen to be a Martian, whatever you drink first passes through the stomach before going to the small intestine.

The stomach can greatly influence how quickly a fluid is absorbed and reaches the bloodstream. Unfortunately, none of the various manufacturers of sports drinks appear to be interested in knowing how well their products are absorbed by the stomach. And even if their products are quickly absorbed, there is no evidence that the rate of fluid absorption affects athletic performance.

What does this teaches us? Simply that “the best way to avoid dehydration is to drink enough fluids to offset your sweat loss – a pint for every pound loss during a workout. You should drink before, during, and after a workout. Several kinds of fluids will do the job. Plain water, which is easily absorbed by the body, is perfectly adequate – and is in fact the best beverage to drink before you exercise,” said the editors of Consumer Reports.

The sodium in sports drinks supposedly helps the body retain fluids after intense, prolonged exercise better than water. Promoters of performance drinks say this was shown in a study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine.

However, Edward F. Coyle, director of the Human Performance Laboratory of the University of Texas and co-author of the study, said the differences between the two fluids were minimal. And if you eat a meal within three hours, you can get enough sodium without wasting money on any sports drink.

Another selling point of sports drinks is that they effectively replace electrolytes that are lost when you sweat. Again, this is a triumph of hope over reason. While sports drinks do contain sodium and potassium that are lost when you perspire, there’s no need to consume them since experts say you can easily get these minerals from a good meal.

“The electrolytes in sports drinks have one benefit: manufacturers claim the electrolytes help keep you thirsty and encourage you to keep drinking until you get enough fluid. But if you follow the experts’ advice, that potential benefit is irrelevant. Sports physiologists recommend that you start drinking before you feel thirsty, and keep drinking even after your thirst is quenched,” said the editors of Consumers Reports.
