Absolute Radio runs Facebook Sponsored Stories ads

Wed, 9 Mar 2011 | by Jessica Davies

Absolute Radio has launched its first Facebook Sponsored Stories ads to back its above-the-line Faces for Radio campaign.

The radio network is one of the first users of the ad format, which Facebook launched in January (nma.co.uk 26 January 2011).

The ad format shows a user’s interactions with the brand, such as check-ins and likes, within display ads on their friends’ profiles.

Absolute Radio has launched the Facebook campaign to drive likes and support its Faces for Radio campaign, which promotes its Frank Skinner, Dave Gorman and Christian O’Connell shows.

The radio network has also launched a Facebook app for the campaign. this lets users post their ’morning faces’ – pictures of themselves taken before they’ve readied themselves for the day – which appear on the app and then on their Facebook wall.

The app also automatically generates a comical status update related to the pictures, such as ’[Username] has a face like…a bag of spanners’.

Friends can vote on the best post, and the one with the most votes by the end of the campaign, at the end of this month, will win £5,000, while runners-up will get £1,000 and £500 prizes.

Absolute Radio worked with social media company Betapond on the app.

Aaron Sorkin: Oscar win like being hit with bat

      (CBS News)

LOS ANGELES – Ever wondered what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the statement, “And the Oscar goes to”?

Aaron Sorkin, who won the “Best Adapted Screenplay” Academy Award for the film “The Social Network,” shared his impression of his Oscar moment on “The Early show.”

“It’s a surreal experience. It’s like being hit in the head with the world’s greatest baseball bat,” he said. “It really is. you have cartoon stars and birds floating around your head. And it’s honestly, it’s only now, and I don’t know if your viewers know right now, just a little past 4:00 a.m. (in Los Angeles) … that it’s really starting to sink in and I’m starting to remember pieces of it. Frankly, I couldn’t tell you what I did or said when I was on stage yet.”

Sorkin, who didn’t have a Facebook account before he started work on the movie, said he’s currently not on the social network.

“I barely heard of Facebook (before the film),” he said. “I heard of it, but I heard of it the way I heard of a carburetor. I can’t possibly put it in my car, let alone tell you what it does. I got a Facebook account while I was working on the movie so I could understand what the whole thing was about. I took it down after I was done writing the movie. So many people last night said, ‘Be my Facebook friend’ that I think I will join just so I could be friends.”

So what’s next for the Oscar winner?

Sorkin said he’s going to start writing again.

“You follow up something like this by just writing as well as you can,” he said. “Again, I’ll be honest with you, I’ve spent the last few months being kind of nervous because, knowing that whatever I write next is going to be the thing that I do after ‘The Social Network’ and I’ve even been writing back and forth with David Seidler who won last night for writing ‘The King’s Speech’ and we’ve been talking about, you know, what do we do now? We’re just — whatever we do next we’re going to get killed for, because it won’t be this thing that we did last time. we both just agreed, just let’s keep doing what we did at the beginning, and just write as well as we can.”

Nancy O’Dell, Special Correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight,” who covered Oscar night red carpet arrivals, remarked on “The Early Show” that reaching a younger audience was the show’s very public intention this year, but the placement of 94-year-old screen legend Kirk Douglas “was kind of odd.”

Sorkin also commented on acting legend Kirk Douglas’ appearance, saying, “He is a stroke victim and he was beautiful last night. He’s got a phenomenal acting career. He’s also the guy I think of who has a lot of responsibility for breaking the Hollywood blacklist. And a lot of people don’t know that. With ‘Spartacus’ He insisted that the writer’s name go on the movie, even though that writer had been blacklisted and that really was what made the wall come crumbling down.”

Sorkin was referring to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo who was credited for “Spartacus.”

Advice for the classroom Facebook stalker

You are here: Home – Opinions – Columns – Advice for the classroom Facebook stalker

        I’m looking at you.

Not you, guy playing angry Birds on your iPhone. or you, girl failing miserably at today’s Sudoku puzzle. You distract me, but I can tolerate you.

I’m looking at YOU — Facebookers in classrooms everywhere.

So is everyone sitting behind you.

Professors go on and on about how distracting Internet usage is to other students in class. they might make laptop users sit elsewhere to protect the attention spans of others.

If there’s an open, powered computer in front of a student, chances are someone’s on Facebook — regardless of the computer-use policy outlined in the syllabus.

What’s more, chances are that person is Facebook stalking.

Of course, the term “stalking” can be used lightly. It doesn’t take much activity on the beloved ‘Book to make a person look a bit too interested in another’s weekend shenanigans.

That curiosity doesn’t make someone restraining order-level creepy, per se. But it does grant them a level of creepiness so intense it lingers in the souls of those seated behind the active browser.

I’ve noticed many breeds of Facebook creeps — with a variety of different strategies. And I’ve come to a few conclusions.

If someone is searching for a specific non-friend and combing through their available information — he’s a resourceful Facebook creep.

If a girl is reading the entire wall-to-wall between some frat star and another girl — she’s probably a stage-5-clinger Facebook creep.

If a fellow student happens to look through all 56 default pictures of someone I know — he’s a six-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon Facebook creep. And no, his secret is not safe with me.

It’s not that I try to judge every person who logs into the website that is the bane of interpersonal communication as we know it.

I — along with many others — simply get sucked into whatever “research” the person in front of me is doing. I’m invading their privacy. And yet, I’m uncomfortably interested in the user whose profile beckons my attention.

But as much as I ridicule public Facestalkers, I still want to help them mend their ways.

        I’ve been there.

And during the lowest of my public creeping lows, I had an epiphany: using this site is a science. But I think I’ve almost mastered it.

Allow me to offer you some helpful steps to avoid creepiness.

Step one — the mini-feed is all you need. Staying on the homepage and doing your recon from there keeps you within the boundaries of people you already know.

Step two — dim your screen and tilt it back a bit.

Step three — your body position is key. Hover over your laptop. That way, you’re boxing out the potential voyeurs — while doing the looking yourself.

With these steps, you’ll be safe.

So yeah, I’m that Quasimodo-positioned ginger with the dim Macbook Pro — but at least I’m not that redheaded girl from your journalism class who opened your roommates’ friendship page right before your eyes.

That seems like a fair trade to me.

It’s important to set the creeping standard to a minimum. I’ve been moderately successful thus far, and I sincerely hope fellow students heed my advice.

But if the general need to openly Facebook stalk persists, I suppose I wouldn’t mind students choosing my profile as a scapegoat.

They could read my publicly advertised blog at their own convenience. I could definitely use the Social Network-ing celebrity.

Oh, right… I mean… scratch that. Ignore me. Pay attention in class!

Facebook Users' Verdict On Redesign: Hate! – CBS News

I wonder how many people have the guts to leave facebook now though. It’s woven itself so deeply into the communications landscape of most people’s lives that extricating yourself from it after investing all that time and effort into uploading photos and adding “friends” is like committing social suicide. and I should know because I got so fed up of facebook I closed my account last month.

Since then I have told my friends if they want to contact me they should email or phone or actually meet me and REAL life has been so much more rewarding.

In addition to this I have set up www.myrealwall.com where people can still post on my wall, but with a twist.

Instead of posting on my facebook wall, if people want to post on my wall now, they actually have to write me a REAL post i.e. a letter and put a stamp on it and send it to my house. I then take their post, read it and stick it on my REAL wall, which then gets photographed every day and posted on the net.

This little social experiment has proved to be quite a neat little filter and I’ve noticed that the spam I receive from friends has effectively been cut to zero and I have not been bitten by a zombie since I started, although I’ve had a couple of pokes from friends, who have actually made the effort to come to my house and poke me in REAL life.

It’s a strange old place facebook. People will whinge about how much they hate it, the new design etc. But when it comes down to let’s see how many facebookers do more than complain and put their money where their mouth is and actually LEAVE facebook as a result.

            Not many I suspect.

            mischief
