Detroit Red Wings’ visits to San Jose to become scarcer if they get their realignment wish

Thursday night’s game between the Sharks and Detroit Red Wings at HP Pavilion is the second of four between the teams this season.

That’s how often each has appeared on the other’s schedule since San Jose entered the NHL in 1991. But four may no longer be the magic number going forward if Detroit gets its way in the leaguewide debate over realignment and ends up in the Eastern Conference.

Because that would mean far fewer visits to San Jose.

The issue is a divisive one, and whereas Sharks coach Todd McLellan and Detroit coach Mike Babcock have a shared past, similar philosophies and mutual respect, they don’t see eye to eye on this.

“I would love to see them stay out here” in the West, McLellan said Wednesday. “If I’m a fan and I get to pick one night I’m here, that may be the one night I come to the game.”

Babcock has a different perspective.

“Anything that gets me no three-hour time change like this, I’m all for it,” he said. “Whenever we can play in our time zone, that’s what I want to do.”

Realignment became an issue last summer after the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg as the Jets. That move came too late to restructure this season’s schedule, but the NHL recognizes that it can’t continue to have a Manitoba team in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference.

The Red Wings have been lobbying hard to be the Western team moving east to replace Winnipeg. if that happens and the current unbalanced schedule format goes unchanged, Detroit’s visits to San Jose could be down to one every two seasons.

Detroit has clout in the NHL, but its move is far from a sure thing.

Both Columbus and Nashville also are lobbying to move East, and either team’s transfer would do less to upset competitive balance than having the Red Wings switch conferences. Traditionalists also point out that if Detroit exits the West, only one Original six team will be left there — and the Chicago Blackhawks went on record this week against that.

The realignment also could be more complicated than a simple one-for-one swap.

One plan, for example, reduces the present six divisions to four — two in the West with seven teams, two in the East with eight — even though it means the Sharks, for example, might have an easier path to the playoffs than the Boston Bruins.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson was in Toronto this week for meetings that included a league presentation on realignment but no discussion. The real conversation begins Dec. 5 when the NHL Board of Governors convenes for two days in Pebble Beach.

Things could get resolved in Pebble Beach, but they could drag on because of other matters. if there is a sense the Coyotes could leave Phoenix, for example, that move might have further impact on realignment.

While self-interest does come into play, Wilson added that teams also need to take a step back “and do what’s right for the entire league.”

And while travel always will be a bigger problem in the West, Wilson suggested the NHL could try to accommodate those teams that fly greater distances by “taking into consideration how those trips are put together.”

When it comes to Detroit’s future, the Sharks G.M. sides with his head coach.

“We have a really healthy rivalry and respect with that organization,” Wilson said of the Red Wings, “and I think it’s great for both our team and our fans to continue this.”

McLellan offered multiple reason for wanting Detroit in the West — “It’s a great draw, it’s a measuring tool for us, it’s an Original six team with Hall of Fame players on it.”

And his players talked about maintaining the rivalry that the two teams have developed after five playoff encounters.

“You don’t really want that to go away,” Dan Boyle said.

His defense partner, Douglas Murray, eventually got to the same place.

“It’d be nice if they moved to the East because they’re always good,” Murray said. “But it’s nice if they’re in the West, too, because you become better when you play the best. you know what? I would like them to stay.”

Babcock’s objections to staying in the West are motivated by the clock, not the odometer on the team plane. Having previously coached in Anaheim, he said the time change is not as big a problem for California teams.

“I never ever thought it was a big deal to go East because we played the games at 4, body clock-wise,” Babcock said. “But now that I’m in the East time zone, we start tomorrow night’s game at 10:30. That’s when guys go to bed.”

Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart, the former Shark who still makes his home in San Jose, also has dealt with cross-country travel in both directions.

He said he doesn’t have a strong feeling about which conference the Red Wings end up in but added that less travel would definitely help the team — especially in the playoffs.

“There’s no question that if you play three straight series on the West Coast to get to the finals, that wears you out,” Stuart said. “I like playing in the West. But it is a lot of travel.”

Whatever happened to Steve Bartman? Is he still in Chicago? Is he still alive?

I hope so. I cant find any info on him. I feel for the guy because most fans would have done the same thing that he did.

AND not to mention Bartman didnt lose that game… or that series… or the next game for them… the Marlins beat them… if Alou would have caught that ball the fake ball girl video never would have been created because they could of just used the Alou footage…

I will say that if they would have beaten the Marlins they would have gone on to win the World Series, but it didnt happen that way, and it was crazy for us down here in Florida to see our team win a second WS.

Yeah it's terrible that that had happend. I am a diehard cubs fan, and i agree with all of this. It's all kind of rediculous, BUT! if your favorite team was 5 outs from going to the world series since you've been alive, i'm sure you'd be a little steamed too. what people seem to forget is Alex Gonzalez messed up a routine ground ball for a douple play THE NEXT PITCH. that was the worst part. That's what lost the damn game, so a Gonzalez should have a HUGE part in the whole melt down. People are too suspicious with this whole "Curse"… that's probably why there's a damn curse in the first place.

When are the san francisco giants going to play the new york yankees again?

i know they played in 2007 but when are the new york yankees comming back to the bay? i missed that game and i would love to go.. actually i didnt know they were here…

i think they play this year here in the Bay

They play each other this year I'm sure of it. The AL East is playing the NL West this year in inter-league play. The Yankees are playing the Dodgers down in L.a., while Red Sox are playing the Giants up in the Bay. The Dodgers go and play the Red Sox in Boston later this year, so I assume that the Giants will play the Yankees up in New York later in the year as well.

They most likely won't be going back to AT&T park till the next time the AL East plays the NL West, which won't be till 2013.

P.S.- My bad. The NL West plays the AL East almost ever single year. But it's different teams each time. I know the whole Red Sox, Yankees vs. Dodgers and the Giants thing only happens every 3 or so years. IDK it's hard to explain because inter-league is confusing as hell. I know for sure they don't play each other next year.

They do not play each other in 2010 but The Yankees will be in the Bay area to face Oakland 4/20-23/2010. They will stay on the West coast to play The Angels 4-24&25.

He is probably taking a long look at himself as a teamate. He had a lot of talent as a back but according to a lot of the players he was an annoyance in the locker room. It's probably easier for the Giants to work without him.
