DeBoom ready for Ironman 70.3 Boulder

The race is now called the Ironman 70.3 Boulder.

So it`s fitting that Tim DeBoom — the legendary two-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion who lives and trains in Boulder — is among the big names on the impressive list of professional athletes competing in the event.

The 1.2-mile swim, 13.1-mile run and 56-mile bike race begins at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Boulder Reservoir.

“My eye is on Kona,” DeBoom said. “This is just part of the plan.”

DeBoom won back-to-back Ironman titles at Kona, Hawaii, in 2001 and 2002 and was fourth at the world championships in 2007. Injuries have hampered the 39-year-old in recent years, but he enters the Ironman 70.3 Boulder feeling good physically and mentally focused on making another splash at the Ironman World Championships in October.

“I don`t think I`d be putting the effort in unless I believed I had a good shot of performing well (at the Ironman World Championships),” DeBoom said. “It`s still fun for me to get out and do it. The main thing is I`ve been healthy and not dealing with injury. The past couple years I`ve haven`t had the races under my belt. …

“Right now I`m still in the base phase. But this race is inmy backyard and I`m looking forward to it.”

DeBoom will be making his competitive debut in this event, formerly known as the 5430 Long course Triathlon, although he is certainly familiar with the trails and pavement from his countless hours of training. he has a handful or runner-up finishes in the Boulder Peak Triathlon and was fifth in last month`s edition of the popular race his wife Nicole has won multiple times.

“I haven`t raced the course before, but it`s exciting to do something other than the Boulder Peak,” DeBoom said. “Everybody keeps saying this is a stacked, stellar field. I wouldn`t expect anything less. I expect it to draw one of the best fields in the world every year.”

This will be the first Ironman 70.3 in the region and is a qualifying event for next year`s Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Fla. The race, which includes 1,800 total entrants, has been sold out since January.

“It has definitely been a long time coming,” Ironman 70.3 Boulder race director Scott Straugh said. “The pro field is quite substantial. Boulder is the training ground for so many of these athletes and they are used to the altitude, so it`s going to be interesting to see how it plays out. I`m assuming (the finish) is going to be under four hours.”

Some other familiar faces for local triathlon fans to keep an eye on include Tyler Butterfield, Steve Hackett, Tim Reed, Julie Dibens and Joanna Zeiger.

“This event has been ongoing and now it`s officially an Ironman race. I think it`s a benefit to Ironman,” DeBoom said. “Boulder is an iconic community for endurance sports, and I think having an Ironman in Boulder justifies the brand even more. It`s a great event.”

Who else thinks that report that New York city is the most polite city in the world is absurd?

To me it defines absurdity. my Family in the states (I live in London) was telling me there was something on a morning news program that new York was the most polite city in the world and also more polite than London. this is the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my entire life. That’s like saying Baghdad is a great honeymoon destination for American couples, and that Hawaii is a terrible one.

Who else thinks that report that New York city is the most polite city in the world is absurd?

Some tour groups and outdoor performances will go on as scheduled and require that you show up in person to get a rain check. Others will deliver their service regardless of weather with no refunds. For example, a Kayaking company may say, “We go rain or shine. You’ll get wet any way, so there are no refunds.” Other vendors may allow a cancellation 24 hours ahead of time if there is a particularly severe storm coming in.

Hawaii news channels can also help you get more acquainted with the area. They all have local segments that highlight festivals and events that you might not be aware of. As well, they report any traffic hold ups, closed roads, closed beaches, rip tides, and airport delays. If the worst should happen; they also report on hurricanes and typhoons and even have lava advisories. In case of emergency evacuation, they also report on what precautionary steps you should take.
