    National news in Indian TV channels

    Indian news has suddenly become the hot cake in the world panorama. It is competing for attention with news from other regions of the world. Popular Indian national news is telecast from different TV channels. All the major TV channels have included at least one national news channel in its pocket. Launching a satellite channel is a big headache and news gathering is a tough task. In spite of all these hassle the all the electronic channels in India struggle hard to gather all the important Indian news be it national or local. These news channels have changed the concept of Indian news. They have changed the format of National news. By 1990’s Doordarshan had monopoly over Indian national news. But now the private channels have taken over Doordarshan. In India these private channels make wide coverage of Indian news.

Thus Indian news has travelled a long way right from DD age to that of Times Now and NDTV. From local to national all Indian news is brought under the purview of these channels. In 1983 only 29 percent of the Indian population had an access to the television channel. It got doubled in 1985. By the end of 1990 national news could reach at leach 90 percent of the Indian population. In 1984 DD Metro was launched. Its main purpose was to telecast entertaining programs to the urban viewers. It was confined to metropolitan cities only. In 1988 The NDTV launched a program called world this week. It was a national news based program but it tried to cover international news to a great extent. It was telecast on every Friday. It had a very big commercial success. It changed the panorama of Indian news.

    After 1990 satellite television in India become transnational. CNN introduced international satellite television in India in 1991. After that Z became the first private Hindi news channel of India catering to viewers for Indian or national news. In 1995 NDTV became the first private producer of Indian news called News Tonight. It was followed by Aaj Tak on DD metro. At present news channels are mushrooming like anything. They cover all types of national news and there is a fierce competition among these channels to get top TRP rank. Every year a new news channel comes up with a different hue and tries to cater to the Indian viewers with small or big national news.
