Were the stories told by Jesus in the New Testament true or just stories?

Were the stories told by Jesus in the New Testament (eg. the parable of the lost sheep) real stories and real accounts that actually happenned or were they only made-up stories but which beautifully and strongly illustrated a moral or religious teaching for his followers to understand?

A parable is a story that expresses some truth. the actual stories may not have happened, but usually they reflect something in reality that did happen. For example, if you plant a seed, it may fall on rocks, and not grow. So this is a true event that happens. So they are observations of things that really happen, but are not a specific story about some specific event usually.

Many people call fundamental Christians literalists accusing them of not understanding the difference between allegory and historical text, but that's not true. in many places it's understood that allegory is being used, and many factual things that did happen can be interpreted allegorically.

For example, these historical events really did happen, but Paul interprets them as an allegory.

"Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children."
(Galatians 4:24-25)

For example, in the creation account, what consists of a day is specifically described as "the evening and the morning were the first day". There are no exceptions to this rule that I know of. If the narrative is specific like this, then it literally happened. God may have written it so that the ancient mind could understand the account in their own minds. If it were written for a modern reader it might have more scientific details. but this is all we have.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
(Genesis 1:1-5)

The short answer is that no one knows. :)

The references to lost sheep are general in nature and probably happened countless times. the others, unjust servant, prodigal son, vinedresser, etc., were probably just stories meant to illustrate his point.

Sure.
Why not?

What do you think?

They were stories, but related to real life events taking place all over the world. So although Jesus did not mention who or where the events were taking place, these events would have definitely been taking place at that time and are even taking place presently in different parts of the world.

Jesus is God and the Bible contains the truth.

It would be difficult to explain everything in a short answer.

I would suggest you visit the below website. You will get all the answers, for the below questions and many more.

1) did Jesus really exist?
2) is Jesus God?
3)Why should I believe that the Bible is accurate, or the word of God?
4) what is the Holy Trinity?
5)What is so special about Jesus? why cant I just view him as an ordinary man or a teacher or a prophet? why should I see him as God?

most likely fictional, its be imposable to be certain. however its irrelevant as they exist in scripture simply to explain a teaching.

The Samaritan tale is an excellent tale about how atheists are often the most moral.

Some of the stories were more than likely true but it is the meaning in the stories that really matter.

They were made up. even in context.

Christians: what’s stopping some con artist from inventing new stories about Jesus like the Mormons did?

Don’t you have some kind of system in place to prevent this from happening? I mean, look how absurd the Mormon religion is! It’s a joke but millions of people have been brainwashed into believing it; what’s stopping this from happening again and again resulting in the world being overrun by brainwashed religious zombies all with the most insane, the most ludicrous beliefs imaginable?
