What does everyone think about the 49ers draft? and Do you think they are moving in the right direction?

They filled some of the holes they had on defense last year with the addition of Clements and others. Gore had a huge season last year. would love to hear some opinions about how everyone feels the 49ers will be this season. I think they are moving in the right direction. Playoffs or no Playoffs?

they are my favorite team yes they r moving in the right direction

yes they are gore is a top 5 back, now alex smith made strides, patrick willis and joe staley will be huge for that team, i really think they could make a push for a playoff spot

Yeah man, they will definitly be in the playoffs this year…..as long as Alex Smith has a good year. I think they have filled tremendous holes all over the place, they have good running backs, 2 good recievers now, so new O and D lineman. My only hope is for Alex to have a breakout season. If he does that are going to turn some heads. Watch out everybody its Niners time !!!

Im not a 49r's fan but I like Manny lawson and Patrick willis. that is a young linebacker core with tremendous potential. I think you guys will go to the playoffs next year. Hopefully Vernon Davis will have better production next year.

They're definately moving in the right direction.

Last year was like the "tale of Two Seasons".

They started like crap, but they turned it around
for the second half of the season.

They improved soo much during the season I can't even imagine how much they'll improve by next year.

I definatly think Playoffs next year for them.

    =]

    Yeah, baby.

Three years ago, we had squat. Bryant Young was there, and Julian Peterson, but we were hurting all over the board.

But now look at us. we have Mike Nolan, who apparently is a genius, for coach. And our roster! Smith, Gore, Davis, Clements, Willis, DJack, Harris, Lelie, Alan… starting to sound like a pretty good team.

And they are FIRED UP. Everyone is talking playoffs in camp, and that kind of drive and will and attitude is what makes a championship team.

    PLAYOFFS baby! All the way!

ive been watching the 9ers since 1979 when joe montana was a rookie. what the niners did in the draft and the off season. looks a lot like what they did in the 81 draft and the off season. not many stars ,just good team players. could this be another 81 season. i dont know. i will say it does look good.

The 49ers had a good draft. Willis and Staley should be great players for a long time. I think they have enough talent to not only get to the playoffs but win a few while they are there. I don't know if I would say they are Super Bowl bound but they definitely have the talent to go far.

I hate to be the only guy with a negative but I have to say there are two things which could keep them from the playoffs. First, how is the offense going to do with a new offensive coordinator? Turner was a great influence on Smith and Gore and I think he was the type of guy who was able to add to their stats with his play calling ability. Second, what happens if Gore gets hurt? Gore was a stud last year but he has had injury problems in college. If he goes down, who picks up the slack? Maurice Hicks? maybe Michael Robinson but I think he is a situational runner not an every down guy.

Sorry to put a negative spin on my answer because I think with a healthy Gore and if the new coordinator is pretty good the 49ers will be hard to beat.

Its not any easy answer. I think to many it looks they are but in reality they are clearly a few years away from Superbowl contenders. maybe a playoff spot this year but I am putting them at 9-7 and not making it. they are weak at safety, defensive line, and offensive line. Not to mention wide out and tight end (whats up with vernon davis hes not even their starting TE anymore???). they will be in trouble down the road when their players cash in on their huge over-paid salaries. they paid way too much for Clements among other. Frank Gore is now a top 3 running back but has had fumbling problems in the past. On paper they look to improve from next year but I really dont see them going past 9-7 without legitimate threats in the passing game.

What does everyone think about the 49ers draft? and Do you think they are moving in the right direction?

Has anyone ever "doubted" your stories or ideas before?

Has anyone ever thought that your stories or ideas weren't good enough? People have been doubting my latest story, but hopefully I can prove them wrong!

I've had one person doubt me, and that's because she's the only person I actually *know* that I'll give my stories to.

I've also doubted myself, which is so much worse than having someone else doubt you. I think every writer has experienced that, and it's almost worse than the proverbial "writer's block." But either way, don't let it get you down. Trust in your ideas, you're the only person who knows them inside and out, and therefore are the only person who is qualified enough to judge them (at least until they make it onto the paper).

Don't let others get you down, and keep doing what you love.
      You'll show them,

Good luck and happy writing :) .

Oh, hell yeah. I had someone tell me once–my best friend, to be exact–that she didn't read my stories because they were too long, boring, and predictable. she said everything I wrote was bad, and that she'd been lying the past couple years when she said she didn't want to read my stuff because I never finished it.

Depressing stuff. But I also had people tell me different. People I didn't know who didn't have any reason to give me lip service. It's all about opinion. You're doing good. Finish your latest story, get it published, and rub it in all of those people's faces who doubted you.

Oh definately! and sometimes they are quite correct.

But the thing you have to remember is that they don't know the whole story. they don't know every detail or plot line you are planning to write!

If you believe that your story is good then there is nothing to worry about. when you start doubting yourself is when the trouble starts.

Hahaha, the first time i told my parents i wanted to write, they laughed and told me to keep dreaming, i was only 11.

But hey, now im writing for magazines and they're not laughing anymore. (:

Just stick with it, be determined and it WILL happen.

Yeah! I think all writers go through that though.

Has anyone ever "doubted" your stories or ideas before?

The Bigger Political Message of Big Love – WNYC

I loved “Big Love,” from the moment it debuted on HBO in 2006. I blogged about the show many times over the years, and what I believed to be its politically charged message.

The “Big Love” finale aired on Sunday night. unlike real-world polygamy, which continues, not only Utah and Arizona, but also in dark corners of the tri-state area, the polygamist family that bill Paxton’s character built will live on only On Demand. The principle lessons he and his sister-wives taught us, however, will live on in perpetuity.

During its five-season run, many people told me they would not watch the show for what they said were political reasons. They could not, watch a show that celebrated polygamy, and therefore the rape and denigration of women, they said.

Respectfully, however, I disagreed. First of all the show did anything but “celebrate” its main characters. The patriarch of the polygamist family at the center of the drama was a tortured soul, not just morally and spiritually but politically, as well.

In season four, Henrickson becomes increasingly hypocritical, as he makes a run for public office, all the while juxtaposing his private life against his public persona. Henrickson selfishly betrays the people he loves in order to win. he races around town, putting out the fires of one scandal after another, and manages to succeed on Election Day, but at what cost? he is utterly transformed into a detestable character.

In this way, “Big Love” mirrored our experience with to many of our real-life politicians. We watched as Henrickson the Man – an honorable person of family and business, trying to live his alternative lifestyle under the radar – morphed into Henrickson the Politician – an egoist who forgets his original purpose in running for office: To secure the rights of his underrepresented community.

How many of our real-life politicians do just that? Forget the unrepresented voices they vowed to represent? Live double lives they cannot, in the end, reconcile? Lose their sense of purpose to their own ambition?

That is why “Big Love” was not really about polygamy, at all. It was about so much more. this was a supremely political show, with every episode challenging us to think about the value judgments we Americans so love to make about the life choices of others. At bottom, this was a show that reminded us to not throw stones from the windows of our own glass houses.

Created by mark Olsen and Will Scheffer (partners in work and life), “Big Love” was originally intended to ask its audience to consider the judgments we pass on alternative lifestyles. It was a unique way to explore families outside the American mainstream.

As the show evolved, however, it quickly became a Rorschach test of for viewers to reconsider the assumptions we make about any other family, about what is going on over the white picket fence, behind the neighbor’s closed doors, under their shingled rooftops. It was a cogent reminder that things are never quite what they seem.

As the show’s patriarch clung to his moral code — The Principle — with religious ferocity and his wives, to varying degrees, challenged it – every episode explored the supremely political divide between the modern woman and patriarchal society – didn’t we all have to question our right to question their moral compasses?

After all, how many of us has struggled with our own choices as much as the Henricksons? Why are any of us Catholics or Jewish? Monogamous or married at all? Are these conscious choices or inherited faiths, lifestyles, cultural norms, passed down from father to son, mother to daughter? have we done enough self-examination to spend as much time as we do with our noses so firmly planted in the business of others?

The show made an important distinction between the life of polygamy as chosen by mature and independent people and the externally imposed life of those at Juniper Creek – a fictional polygamist compound from which bill had been forced as a “lost boy,” cast out by men who prefer to hold close the power – and the women. Modeled on the real-life compound of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints (FLDS), young girls are married off at an early age, most often against their will.

It is an issue that, during the run of “Big Love,” captured the national consciousness, with headlines from the New York Times, to National Geographicto Marie Claire.

Quite by coincidence, Warren Jeffs the real-life president of the FLDS was arrested, prosecuted and tried on charges of rape as an accomplice during the second season of “Big Love.” I was at Court TV at the time and we covered the trial, gavel to gavel. (Jeffs was convicted, but the sentenced was reversed; he now awaits trial on similar charges in Texas.)

During season three, we covered the decision by Texas authorities to storm the Yearning for Zion polygamist compound in Eldorado and remove, by force, 400 women and children from their homes in response to a call from a woman claiming to be a victim. (The call turned out to be a hoax, the case made it’s way all the way to the Texas Supreme Court, and the children were later returned.)

Throughout our coverage of both stories, as reporters across the spectrum struggled for objectivity, I was taken with the moral judgments passed by most Americans on a world and lifestyle about which we knew so little, and the cultural domination of the local and dominant Mormon communities over the unorthodox polygamist groups. in both cases, the US Constitution provided clarity for all involved – prosecutors, defendants, alleged victims and journalists seeking to tell the story to a larger country far removed from it. It was a mighty struggle, however, to preserve the rights of the minority against the tyranny of the majority.

Real world politicians and the citizens they represent could take a lesson from “Big Love.” As the political climate becomes increasingly caustic, in this country, we would all do well to remember that snap judgments about our neighbors never serve the larger interests of justice or democracy. They only distract us from the real issues and undermine our common purpose, to form a more perfect union.

Or as third Wife Margene said on “Big Love,” “There have only been a few times in my life when I’ve seen this much stubbornness going on all sides of a fight…I really want to bring all sides together, but I’m making zero headway…I can’t start judging everyone because that’s its own form of stubbornness. But, man, Come on!”

Giants offered Uribe $20 million over three years; plus, a deal for a SS might …

UPDATE: Giants agree to one-year deal with Tejada after Uribe turned down three years, $20 million

UPDATE: The Giants, having lost Juan Uribe to the Dodgers, have agreed to a one-year contract with 37-year-old Miguel Tejada, the former fan favorite in Oakland, a major-league source has confirmed. The deal is pending a physical.

ESPN Deportes, which first reported the deal, pegged it at $6.5 million.

Once again, the Giants will sacrifice some defense at short for more offense. he hit 15 homers with 71 RBIs for the Orioles and Padres last year, with a slash line of .269/.312/.381. he played shortstop in 57 of the 62 games he played for the Padres after his late-season trade.

It’s my understanding the Giants offered Uribe a three-year, $20 million deal — only $1 million less than the three-year, $21 million contract he accepted from the Dodgers. Uribe was seeking three years at $25 million from the Giants.

ORIGINAL POST: Juan Uribe’s three-year, $21 million contract with the Dodgers became official today. In a conference call, Uribe thanked Giants fans for their affection and said he gave everything on the field because of the love he felt.

Three times, though, Uribe said he had “no control” over what the Giants would do. In baseball code, Uribe was saying the Giants’ offer to keep him was not good enough. I have to think the Giants were willing to go for two years, maybe with a third-year option.

According to an industry source, the Giants told Uribe’s camp at the last minute they would match the Dodger offer, but his deal with L.a. was too far down the road. a Giants official said that’s not true.

It’s my understanding that as the long negotiations wore on, the Dodgers put some heat on Uribe to accept their best offer, lest it be taken off the table.

I asked Uribe on the conference call if it was hard to leave the Giants after leading them to a championship. His reply, through an interpreter:

“I have nothing bad to say about the Giants. to the contrary, I’m very happy with how the fans treated me. They showed me a lot of affection. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity. As for leaving, I have no control over that.”

I then asked if he understood why Giants fans would be angry with him for going to the rival Dodgers. His reply:

“I’d like to say I have not control over a team I played for. Sometimes the fans don’t understand that. I played 100 percent with all my emotions because the San Francisco fans treated me well every day I went on the field. They showed me their affection, and that’s why I gave 100 percent.”
