The Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy
It is well known that massage therapy can reduce anxiety, pain and tension and generally feels good. However massage can be more than just relaxing. For athletes massage therapy can be a key contributor to their training regime and considerably enhance their performance. More commonly known as “Sports Massage” massage for athletes utilizes deep muscle working techniques that eliminate toxins in muscle fiber as well as remove adhesions. These techniques applied to athletes, and called Sports Massage, are a combination of Shiatsue and Swedish massage. Some specific methods commonly utilized are pressure point, cross-fiber friction and Swedish strokes. This form of massage can be separated into two sections when it comes to athletes receiving massage: pre-event massage and post-event massage.
Pre-event massage is best done up to two days before your event. This stimulates the flow of nutrients and blood to muscles and produces a mental confidence caused by physiological relaxation. A pre-event massage can significantly improve an athlete’s warm up as well. A sports therapist giving chair massage before an event can reduce mental tension before competition. Massage increases circulation reducing the chance of injury. Muscle tension is relaxed and tissue pliability also benefits hugely from pre-performance massage.
A post-performance massage is short and direct in nature. Lasting for approximately 10-15 minutes it usually focuses on the areas specific to the athlete’s sport. This massage utilizes compression, compressive and petrissage techniques to spread and ease muscle tension. Post-performance massage is thought to significantly expedite muscle recovery and reduce muscle spasms. Full range of motion is a main objective while increased blood flow to muscles after a work out is another benefit. Other benefits include a shorter recovery time, and a significant decrease in delayed onset muscle soreness. On-site chair massage therapy is a great way for athletes to receive the benefits of Sports Massage during a competition.
Sports massage incorporates the physical, psychological and physiological aspects of the athlete to create balance in the system. The physical effect massage has on the athlete’s body is extreme. Lactic acid and other waste products are expedited more quickly out of the system. The improved circulation increases oxygen delivery to muscles, through deep tissue work, which significantly decreases recovery time. The break down of scar tissue and improved muscle elasticity is another advantage. Psychologically speaking massage relaxes the nerves and reduces anxiety and stress. Increased blood flow is generally acknowledged to be good for the immune system, organs and mental health. Physiologically speaking reduced pain will increase the performance of any athlete. The muscle relaxation, which is an obvious benefit of Sports Massage, directly before or after exercise, will increase performance regardless of the type of sport.
Sports Massage promotes recovery and general well being for the serious athlete. Pre and Post massages from trained Sports Massage therapists can greatly reduce risk of injury, improve muscle elasticity and decrease the time it takes to recover from athletic performance.

Know About Sports Massage
Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.
Sports massage is a particular branch of massage that focuses on relieving skeleto-muscular tension and returning the muscles to a loose, relaxed state. Sports massage techniques provide a number of important benefits to athletes. Since they regularly train their muscles hard for peak performance, and then go out a push their bodies to the limit and beyond, they are prone to constant and chronic injuries. Sports massage helps to prevent some of those injuries, as well as speed up recovery time and relieve extreme muscle cramping and tension.
Sports massage can also give valuable information about the athlete’s condition and the effects of their training program. Regular sports massage can help to avoid problems associated with overuse, so allowing for extra training sessions without the risk of injury or trauma.
Sports Massage can also include pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery time.
Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. Deep tissue massage, however, is not for everyone. There can be mild to moderate discomfort during the massage as tight muscles are worked. And there can be a day or two of soreness following the deep tissue massage – similar to after you complete a particularly rigorous workout.
Soft tissue massage is also an integral part of the majority of body massages, including sports massage, so you might experience a slight pressure if your injury is relatively new. The massage methods are based on how the musculoskeletal system functions, so that you will be receiving relief for your joints, bones and muscles, which can add to the pressure that you will feel as well.
Shiatsu is becoming more and more popular as many people are starting to realize the healing powers of shiatsu. Indeed, shiatsu can be used to treat a number of illnesses, as well as bring relief from chronic pain and stiffness.
Hellerwork is an offshoot of Rolfing that adds both mental and movement re-education to the physical work. In a series of 11 sessions, you get instruction on how to break bad posture habits and you also get a massage that focuses on returning your muscles and other tissue to their proper positions. The result can be dramatic. “Sometimes we can greatly increase the spaces in your joints to the point where you may grown three-fourths of an inch taller before you’re done.
Acupressure is a traditional form of Chinese medicine that is based on the same principles as acupuncture. Pressure is applied to points along the body which removes blocks in the meridian system. Often helpful for improving the immune system and well-being.

• tapping
• stretching of the body
• long and smooth gliding strokes.
With this type of massage called the draping technique which consists of the person is prepared by being covered with sheet while another part of the body is uncovered, and massaged then when that part of completed it is then covered and then another part will be massaged. The Swedish massage has been known to help reduce pain, improve mobility for those with joint stiffness, and patients who suffer with osteoarthritis.

2. The second type of massage is after the sports event which is done within an hour or two to help massage the soft tissue in the body.
3. The third is called a restorative sports massage which is done during training to help the athlete to train harder. Even with stretching without the massage will not help the problem in its entirety so the massage will further help in relieving the pain and healing the injury.

Understanding Massage for Sports
If you have ever been watching any sports game, surely you have seen a massage therapist running out on to the field or helping a player on the bench, massaging them. Massage for sports is not just voluntary, it is mandatory. Athletes are more prone to injury than the average person, and so it is necessary that there is always a sports massage therapist there who can treat them if they strain or pull a muscle.
Often these massage therapists will perform a Swedish deep tissue massage on players, which is one of the most intense types of massage. Sports massage is a special type of massage which is used before, during and after athletic events. The purpose is to ensure that the athletes are always in the best physical condition possible and to help them avoid injury.
The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity, and so obviously for athletes who are active for a living, this is going to be particularly important. Sports massage has been implemented for almost as long as sports themselves have been around, at least since people realized its importance and how beneficial it was to athletes.
The Details
Whether you are interested in becoming a sports masseuse yourself or are an athlete, it will be helpful for you to learn more about massage for sports and what it has to offer. Massage for sports has a lot in common with other types of massage, but it does tend to have a more thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology.
There are many benefits offered by massage for sports, and in particular it helps to relieve the tension and restore balance in athletes’ bodies. If the athletes did not have this person there to be concerned with this, the muscle imbalances would go unnoticed and most likely undiagnosed and possibly end up causing them serious problems in the long run.
There are certain situations in which massage for sports is not recommended, however. This includes if the person has a fever, tumors, cancer, melanoma, hemophilia, infectious skin diseases such as lymphangitis or herpes, and diabetes.
In addition to helping the players to feel good, sports massage helps by reducing heart rate and blood pressure, increasing blood circulation and lymph flow, improving flexibility and relieving pain from all over the body. It can also help to promote greater athletic endurance.
