Breaking News: 2 Major TNA Stars Ask For Release?

At Monday night’s triple Impact tapings in Orlando, former NWA champion Ron “The Truth” Killings and Monty Brown requested their releases from TNA. Terry Taylor tried to convince both to remain with the company, and at this point, nothing has been decided reports the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Brown’s contract is set to expire soon, and he works as a personal trainer outside the wrestling business. As noted here before, WWE would certainly be interested if he became a free agent.

Killings would have options as well, as “The Truth” is over in Mexico and is wanted by AAA and Vampiro’s new promotion, Revolution X Wrestling. There is also a rumor that WWE may consider bringing back too Cool (Scotty too Hotty and Brian Lawler), and would entertain the possibility of Killings joining the group. Killings isn’t being pushed in TNA, and is upset that he was asked to job to A1 at a recent television taping.

Gulf gusher to keep flowing as cap test delayed | AP Top Stories …

      NEW ORLEANS —

The plan to start choking off oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico was suddenly halted as government officials and BP said further analysis must be done Wednesday before critical tests could proceed.

No explanation was given for the decision, and no date was set for when testing would begin on the new, tighter-fitting cap BP installed on the blown-out well Monday.

In the meantime, oil continued spewing into the Gulf.

The oil giant had been scheduled to start slowly shutting off valves Tuesday on the cap, aiming to stop the flow of oil for the first time in three months. BP was initially ahead of schedule on its latest effort to plug the leak. the cap was designed to be a temporary fix until the well is plugged underground.

A series of methodical, preliminary steps were completed before progress stalled. Engineers spent hours on a seismic survey, creating a map of the rock under the sea floor to spot potential dangers, like gas pockets. it also provides a baseline to compare with later surveys during and after the test to see if the pressure on the well is causing underground problems.

An unstable area around the wellbore could create bigger problems if the leak continued elsewhere in the well after the cap valves were shut, experts said.

“It’s an incredibly big concern,” said Don Van Nieuwenhuise, director of Professional Geoscience Programs at the University of Houston. “They need to get a scan of where things are, that way when they do pressure testing, they know to look out for ruptures or changes.”

It was unclear whether there was something in the results of the mapping that prompted officials to delay. Earlier, BP Vice President Kent Wells said he hadn’t heard what the results were, but he felt “comfortable that they were good.”

National Incident Commander Thad Allen met with the federal energy secretary and the head of the U.S. Geological Survey as well as BP officials and other scientists after the mapping was done.

“As a result of these discussions, we decided that the process may benefit from additional analysis,” Allen said in a statement. he didn’t specify what type of analysis would be done, but said work would continue until Wednesday.

Assuming BP gets the green light to do the cap testing after the extra analysis is finished, engineers need to shut off lines already funneling some oil to ships to see how the cap handles the pressure of the crude coming up from the ground.

Finally, they would shut the openings in the 75-ton metal stack of pipes and valves gradually, one at a time, while watching pressure gauges to see if the cap would hold or if any new leaks erupted. the operation could last anywhere from six to 48 hours, once it gets started.

Scientists will be looking for high pressure readings of 8,000 to 9,000 pounds per square inch. Anything lower than 6,000 might indicate previously unidentified leaks in the well.

The oil giant was optimistic about the latest effort after other attempts failed, and White House officials earlier expressed optimism Tuesday.

But BP has said all along they were working carefully so as to not jeopardize the effort to stop the biggest offshore oil spill in U.S. history and one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters.

If the cap works, it will enable BP to stop the oil from gushing into the sea, either by holding all the oil inside the well machinery like a stopper or, if the pressure is too great, channeling some though pipes to as many as four collection ships.

Earlier, Allen stressed there were no guarantees on the latest measure and urged patience from Gulf residents.

Along the Gulf Coast, where the spill has heavily damaged the region’s vital tourism and fishing industries, people anxiously awaited the outcome of the painstakingly slow work.

“I don’t know what’s taking them so long. I just hope they take care of it,” said Lanette Eder, a vacationing school nutritionist from Hoschton, Ga., who was walking on the white sand at Pensacola Beach, Fla.

“I can’t say that I’m optimistic – It’s been, what, 84 days now? – but I’m hopeful,” said Nancy LaNasa, 56, who runs a yoga center in Pensacola.

The cap is just a stopgap measure. To end the leak for good, the well needs to be plugged at the source. BP is drilling two relief wells through the seafloor to reach the broken well, possibly by late July, and jam it permanently with heavy drilling mud and cement. After that, the Gulf Coast faces a long cleanup.

The leak began after the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling platform exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers. As of Tuesday, the 84th day of the disaster, between 90.4 and 178.6 million gallons of oil had spewed into the Gulf.

Oil spill drags down Obama as voters shift away from president's …

The two-month-old oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is taking a major toll on President Obama’s presidency, according to a new poll released Wednesday evening.

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey of 1,000 adults also shows that Obama is suffering from a backlash against his policies, and that the nation remains generally conservative on issues of government spending and the size of government.

The number of Americans who think the country is on the wrong track is the highest of Obama’s presidency in this particular poll, at 62 percent. And disapproval of Obama’s job performance has also climbed to an all-time high in these polls, at 48 percent, while approval is at an all-time low, at 45 percent.

The number of people who are “not at all confident” that Obama has the right “goals and policies to be president of the United States” – 37 percent – has also spiked up significantly since January, when that number was 29 percent.

Attitudes about the future of the U.S. economy were also more pessimistic in the poll than of any during Obama’s time in office, with only 33 percent saying they think it will get better, down from 40 percent in may.

Americans’ faith in Obama’s ability to handle a crisis has slipped significantly since January. Specifically on the oil spill, 42 percent said they approved of Obama’s handling of the ongoing disaster, while 50 percent said they disapproved. However, more people blamed the Interior Department – headed by Secretary Ken Salazar – the Environmental Protection Agency, and oil giant BP for not doing enough about the problem than those who blamed Obama or Congress.

As for Congress, the survey showed Republicans with a major edge going into this fall’s midterm elections, but not without weak points of their own.

More are now in favor of a GOP-controlled Congress than those who favor Democratic control, by a 45 to 43 percent margin. However, only 31 percent said they themselves would vote for a Republican, while 34 percent said they would vote Democratic and 25 percent said they’d cast a ballot for an Independent.

Anti-incumbent sentiment is high: 57 percent said it is time to give someone new a chance, up from 49 percent in January.

Those who said they wanted Republicans to control Congress did so on the basis of a few key issues: 39 percent said they wanted Republicans to reduce government spending, 28 percent said it was to repeal Obama’s health care law, 17 percent said it was to keep taxes down, 15 percent said it was to protest Obama’s policies of Obama, 12 percent said it was to stop Democrats from “controlling Congress,” 10 percent said it was to “promote moral values,” and 9 percent said it was to “strengthen national defense.”

Exclusive: Revolutionary change may allow Pacquiao, Mayweather into Olympic Games

      18 comments Subscribe Subscribe

      EXCLUSIVE REPORT

Imagine the magnificent likes of Manny Pacquiao fighting in the Olympics for his beloved Philippines or unbeaten Floyd Mayweather doing the same for America.

Or Mexico’s accomplished Antonio Margarito boxing in the Olympic Games and repping Mexico.

It’s a fistic fantasy right now but maybe this will happen down the line because revolutionary change is coming, and coming soon, to the international and American amateur boxing scenes.

Examiner.com and Boxingconfidential.com have learned exclusively that AIBA, the group which regulates both Olympic Games boxing and the annual world amateur tournaments, has approved a deal which will allow boxers from different countries, including the USA, to compete in professional bouts but still retain amateur eligibility for some amateur events including fighting in the quadrennial Olympiads.

This exciting new concept begins with a “draft” and AIBA-sanctioned professional boxing “teams.” the first three American franchises are going to be in new York, Los Angeles and Chicago and the cards will feature a series of five-round bouts.

Here’s the worldwide setup, taken from the World Series of Boxing website.

The 12 World Series of Boxing teams are spread across three conferences as follows:

      Americas
      Chicago
      Los Angeles
      New York
      Mexico City

      Asia
      Astana, Kazakhstan
      Baku, Azerbaijan
      Beijing, China
      Delhi, India

      Europe
      Istanbul, Turkey
      Milan, Italy
      Moscow, Russia
      Paris, France

“What this means,” an insider connected to the venture told me, “is that a top American amateur boxer will be able to fight as pro, to get paid something and then still be able to compete for Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals. the same fighter, who might now be referred to as “a pro-am” boxer, would also be able to compete in, let’s say, a USA versus Germany or USA versus Cuba head-to-head international amateur show and then shift back to paid bouts.”

Official logo, World Series of Boxing

My inside source did not discuss the likeliehood of established pros, of distinguished world champions such as Pacman and Money May, going “both ways” and being able to do what NBA superstars from any country do, which is to play professionally and also play in the Olympic Games.

But I say, once you open the barn door to amateur boxers getting paid but retaining eligibility, how long can it be before every national Olympic committee will want its best fighters fighting under their flag?

And how about the increased TV revenue if elite boxers such as Mayweather and Pacquiao were featured in the Games?

In that case, I’d have to think the rest of the world would be decided underdogs to the Ukrainian team, at least in the super heavyweight class where it could have BOTH Waldimir and Vitali Klitschko fighting for medals. I predict plenty of walkovers in that bracket, lol.

And, while I’m on the topic, maybe it’s sneaky way to get the K Bros. to actually fight each other.

Too bad this kind of progressive move was not made back in the era of Muhammad Ali as the greatest pro heavyweight and Cuba’s Teofilo Stevenson dominating one Olympiad after another. that was always a dream fight for fans.

Given America’s dismal Olympic amateur boxing teams of recent vintage, change of any kind is welcome.
I’m excited about this concept and these proactive changes.

      More to come…

      Response to President Calderon

Response to President CalderonHouse Chamber, Washington, D.C.May 20, 2010M. Speaker:I rise to take strong exception to the speech of the President of Mexico while in this chamber today. The Mexican government has made it very clear for many years that it holds American sovereignty in contempt and President Calderons behavior as a guest of the Congress confirms and underscores this attitude. It is highly inappropriate for the President of Mexico to lecture Americans on American immigration policy, just as it would be for Americans to lecture Mexico on its laws. It is obvious that President Calderon does not understand the nature of America or the purpose of our immigration law. unlike Mexicos immigration law — which is brutally exclusionary — the purpose of Americas law is not to keep people out. It is to assure that as people come to the United States, they do so with the intention of becoming Americans and of raising their children as Americans. unlike Mexico, our nation embraces immigration and what makes that possible is assimilation.A century ago President Teddy Roosevelt put it this way. He said: “In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. but this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…there can be no divided allegiance here. any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. we have room for but one flag, the American flag… we have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” That is how we have built one great nation from the people of all the nations of the world. The largest group of immigrants now comes from Mexico. A recent RAND discovered that during most of the 20th Century, while our immigration laws were actually enforced, assimilation worked and made possible the swift attainment of the American dream for millions of immigrants seeking to escape conditions in Mexico. That is the broader meaning of our nations motto, e pluribus unum from many people, one people, the American people.but there is now an element in our political structure that seeks to undermine that concept of E Pluribus Unum. It seeks to hyphenate Americans, to develop linguistic divisions, to assign rights and preferences based on race and ethnicity, and to elevate devotion to foreign ideologies and traditions, while at the same time denigrating American culture, American values and American founding principles. In order to do so, they know that they have to stop the process of assimilation. In order to do that, they must undermine our immigration laws. It is an outrage that a foreign head of state would appear in this chamber and actively seek to do so. And it is a disgrace that he would be cheered on from the left wing of the White House and by many Democrats in this Congress.Arizona has not adopted a new immigration law. All it has done is to enforce existing law that President Obama refuses to enforce. It is hardly a radical policy to suggest that if an officer on a routine traffic stop encounters a driver with no drivers license, no passport, and who doesnt speak English, that maybe that individual might be here illegally. And to those who say we must reform our immigration laws I reply that we dont need to reform them we need to enforce them. Just as every other government does. Just as Mexico does.above all, this is a debate of, by and for the American people. If President Calderon wishes to participate in that debate, I invite him to obey our immigration laws, apply for citizenship, do what 600,000 LEGAL immigrants to our nation are doing right now, learn our history and our customs, and become an American. And then he will have every right to participate in that debate. until then, I would politely invite him to have the courtesy while a guest of this Congress to abide by the fundamental rules of diplomacy between civilized nations not to meddle in each others domestic debates.
