VCU’s run a sight to behold

Bradford Burgess scored 23 points against Purdue, but he was hardly a one-man show.(Jim Prisching/AP photo)

“We’re not satisfied,” senior point guard Joey Rodriguez said. “We want to keep going. this is a great moment for tonight and a great moment for the university. But, you know, we have a lot more to do.”

With dead-eye shooters and an improving defense they have whipped their first three NCAA opponents – USC, Georgetown and Purdue – by an average of 16.3 points. they have knocked down 29 3-pointers in their three tournament victories and limited their opponents to 40.9 percent shooting.

And they show no signs of slowing down.

“I knew we had a group that was capable of winning,” second-year coach Shaka Smart said. “We just had to have everyone on the same page and everyone going in the same direction, and that’s what we’ve had the last three games.”

VCU has a plucky point guard in Rodriguez, who scored 12 points while collecting 11 assists against the Boilermakers. they have a bevy of scoring options, including junior swingman Bradford Burgess, senior forward Jamie Skeen and senior guard Brandon Rozzell.

Burgess played the star against Purdue (26-8), driving and dunking for 23 points while pulling down eight rebounds. Skeen had 13 points, knocking down 5-of-9 shots. Rozzell hit two 3-pointers en route to 10 points and four rebounds.

When they get an opponent down, they have the swagger to step on their throats. Up 10 at the half against the Boilers, they weathered every Purdue counterpunch, trading baskets before finding their openings and building a 19-point lead on a 3-pointer by Burgess with 11:33 left. Purdue, despite 25 points from JaJuan Johnson and 20 from Ryne Smith, never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

“We attacked them,” Rodriguez said. “Coach told us before the game to come in and attack them and play loose. That’s what we did.

“when guys pressure you, you don’t want to play on your heels. We didn’t. and when you have guys that can make shots like we do, that’s what’s going to happen.”

The Rams have the hottest coach in the country in Smart, 33, smooth and cool and gaining admirers in the money-making March limelight.

They also have a chip on their shoulders after some ESPN pundits suggested they didn’t belong in the tournament at all.

They’ll next meet 10th-seeded Florida State in the San Antonio on Friday and have given us no reason to believe they can’t take care of the Seminoles the same way they’ve destroyed the Trojans, Hoyas and Boilermakers.

This is the team of the moment, one that has gelled at the perfect time to grab the magic of March and run with it.

“I think we lost focus sometimes on the road [earlier this season] and against certain opponents,” Burgess said. “But I think this time around with our second chance, we’ve had an extreme amount of focus and determination to win games and play our style of play.”

Seeing the camaraderie as the Rams gathered at center court to sing, dance and sway arm-in-arm while mugging for the camera was a sight to behold.

It’s a sight we might be seeing a lot more of this month.

        Dream finish

DENVER – On the verge of seeing his unheralded, 13th-seeded Morehead State program turn into something much more impressive, the coach could have called a play for his NBA-bound center or his guard who couldn't miss.

Instead, he decided to go with a dream.

Executing a play that came to his coach the night before, Morehead State's Demonte Harper dribbled patiently and watched the clock tick down. then, he stepped up behind the 3-point line and swished the shot with 4.2 seconds left yesterday for a 62-61 victory over No. 4 Louisville and the first big upset of the NCAA tournament.

"the coach said, 'Hey, I dreamed about this last night, this exact situation,' " Harper said. "he said, 'I know exactly who I'm going to. I'm going to put it right in your hands, Demonte.' he said, 'at 6 seconds, I want you to attack and pull up and hit the shot.' I hit the shot. it feels unreal right now."

After Harper's go-ahead basket, the Cardinals (25-10) had a chance to win it, but Morehead State's best player, center Kenneth Faried, blocked Mike Marra's attempt from the corner.

And that's how little-known Coach Donnie Tyndall, and not Louisville's Rick Pitino, found himself on the floor of the Pepsi Center celebrating. Morehead State of Kentucky – enrollment 9,000 at the base of the Appalachian Mountains – won its first main-draw game in the NCAA tournament since 1984 and will play No. 12 Richmond, a 69-66 upset winner over No. 5 Vanderbilt in a later Southwest region game.

"I think to be a first-round game against an in-state power, to be able to knock them off, I don't think it's ever been bigger than that in the history of our school," Tyndall said.

Chris Smith had 17 points for Louisville, which closed the year on its first two-game losing streak of the season. the Cardinals played the end of the game without their leading scorer, Preston Knowles, who needed to be helped off the court after spraining his left foot with 8:51 left.

"This is as tough a loss as I've had in coaching and I've been coaching a long time," Pitino said.

After Morehead State (25-9) called timeout for its last possession, trailing by one with 23.8 seconds left, Harper seemed an unlikely candidate to take the most important shot in the program's unspectacular history. he was 2-for-9 from the floor and hadn't hit any of his five 3-point attempts.

Meanwhile, Morehead State had the big fella, Faried, not to mention Terrance Hill, who had kept his team in the game by going 5-for-6 from 3-point range.

The Eagles, however, didn't do anything by the book in this one.

If they were going to win, it was supposed to be on the shoulders of Faried, the all-time rebounding leader in Division I. Faried pulled down 17 rebounds but had a terrible day from the field – 4-for-17 for 12 points – and wasn't the biggest factor in this game.

He'll get another chance, though. he can thank Harper – whose only shot of the second half gave him a total of eight points – and Hill, who scored a career-high 23, including 12 during a 16-4 run that turned a seven-point deficit into a 57-52 lead with 5:24 left.

"Words can't explain how proud I am of my teammates because everybody thinks, ''Morehead State and Kenneth Faried,' " Faried said. "But it's Morehead State, 'the Team.' it just speaks volumes about my teammates who just stepped up."

Trailing 57-52, Louisville answered with the next nine points and the upset chances looked all but over with 1:14 left. But the Eagles worked the ball to Faried and he converted two free throws after a foul to pull within 61-59. then, Morehead State fouled Elisha Justice, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to close his team's 7-for-16 day from the free-throw line. Should Sam Bradford be given the Heisman this season despite only playing a few games?

Sam Bradford is probably the best QB in the history of the NCAA; shouldn’t he be awarded?
Texas should be banned for 5 seasons from the NCAA for intentionally injuring him.

          Navy @ Maryland | 2010-09-06 | NCAA Football | Betting Preview …

          NAVY @ MARYLANDFootball : United States : NCAA FootballMonday, September 6th, 2010 – Kickoff 4:00PM ET(9:00PM GMT)

Bit of early football to whet your appetite before the big one between Boise and VT (Preview by Goober on the main page too!) why not excercise your betting balance too. go on!

          Navy Midshipmen

Navy racked up 10 wins last season, meaning they have now had 7 straight seasons in which they have scored 8 wins or more. QB Ricky Dobbs is off a brilliant last season, rushing for 1203 yards and he also broke Tim Tebows record for rushing touchdowns scored by a QB with 27. Dobbs trained throughout the offseason and will lead the teams triple-option which could prove fatal for the Terps.

Also carrying the ball, in addition to QB Dobbs will be Aaron Santiago and Gee Gee Greene. Seniors Jeff Battipaglia and Matt Malloy are back for their last seasons and that means the triple option is further strengthned by experiences.

On defence, the Midshipmen of Navy did a very good job last year. They are anchored by Jabaree Tuani, who is beginning his junior year (Year 3 of 4). Tuani had a so-so season last year but is a solid competitor and will bounce back strong here in the opener. In the secondary, Navy return many veteran players who will keep the defence strong. Senior Wyatt Middleton is the defensive captain and a great playmaker, and collected 68 tackles last year.

          Maryland Terrapins

Ralph Friedgen is about to start his 10th season as coach of the Terps and will be hoping his side can improve on last years 2-10 finish. The Terps do tend to do well in season openers though, as they have won 5 in the last 6 years.

Junior Jamarr Robinson, who started just 2 games last year and played a small part in 5 more games, will be the QB this season. look for him to go to Torrey Smith out wide, who also returns the ball very well. on the other side of the pitch will be Adrian Cannon, giving Robinson 2 options when his side aren’t running the ball, which is their main source of attack.

The defense has to pull it’s socks up as the last years performances weren’t good enough. The one bright spot was linebacker Alex Wujciak, who is probably one of the best in the country. He racked up an average of 10.92 tackles per game, and will pose the biggest threat to the Navy offense. Adrian Moten will join him in the linebacking corps, along with Demetrius Hartsfield, who is another young talent with a lot of potential to do well.

Cameron Chism is the main man in the secondary, collecting 4 interceptions last year, and is a solid player in the corner. The other corner will be filled by McDougle and Trenton Huges.

          BETTING VERDICT

So, a bit of team news there, but on strategy, Maryland will try and run the ball and on a neutral field, albeit in Baltimore, I don’t see them get this done. The line has dropped to only 6 and if you are an ATS bettor, I would go with Navy -6 as I can see them win by at least a touchdown. The straight up win is priced at 1.45 and I think this is good enough to lump on. Enjoy the game!

The Pick : Navy to winFIXED ODDS BETTING :Navy to win @ 1.45 (Pinnacle)HANDICAP BETTING :Navy -6 @ 1.95 (Pinnacle)
