WALTHAM Forest Council is organising six one-off events to celebrate next year’s Olympic Games – but not one of them will be held in Chingford.
the council’s big 6 includes a Christmas-themed Winter Wonderland, a new Year’s fireworks display, a sports weekend, two concerts and a film festival to mark Waltham Forest’s status as a host borough for the 2012 Games.
the total cost is estimated at between £800,000 and £1.5million, while the contractors – a subsidiary of the Co-op firm based in Manchester – will receive a 10 per cent fee on top.
the authority says the spending is not a waste because through the Olympics it has received millions in extra Olympic-related regeneration grants for things such as street improvements.
it also hopes to recoup some costs through one-off income generated by the Games, although the authority has not said how.
Critics slammed the spending and say the neglect of Chingford reflects the council’s lack of interest in the area – a claim it has always strongly denied.
the council says one of the fireworks events is being held in the Highams Park and denies Chingford is being ignored.
but Pat Brannagan, 65, of Mayhew Close said she was disgusted and added: “It goes to show what the council thinks of Chingford, but they shouldn’t be having these events anyway. the Olympics should be a celebration in itself, why do we need it? We’re already paying millions to put them on out of our taxes.”
Council leader Cllr Chris Robbins defended the spending and said: “We want to help residents celebrate 2012 and thank them for their patience while the Games take place, and so far the feedback we’ve had from our residents has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The Olympics are bringing Waltham Forest new sports facilities, better streets, better parks, new job opportunities and a £7.6million construction skills centre.”

What do you think about the winter olympics?
Okay so the 2010 Winter Olympics are being held in my hometown
I think there awesome while some people think there a complete waste of time and money. What yall think?
Sports are awesome, in general. International friendly competition is also great. Testing the human limits, also good on my book. so far so good.
Sadly there's a lot more to this (and most) Olympics, in practise. They are too much a PR operation for the participating states and the sponsoring corporations, so they ruin what they should be, what the public wants to believe they are all about.
Why should an athletic event multiply homelessness or criminalize poverty? why should an athletic event drown the hosting city in debt for years to come? why can't the hosting country officially admit its past and present crimes e.g. regarding the first Nations here, or the genocide+diaspora in Sochi (the next winter Olympics)?
It should not need to be that way…
I live in Vancouver Canada. I love the winter Olympics..however, after seeing how the Olympic committee runs things..they seem to have their own rules and laws irregardless of the Country that hosts the games..I hope it doesn't come back to Vancouver.
Booooorrrrrriiiiiinnnnng.
I would call skiing a past time, not a sport. It's like having a board game olympics or a walk on the beach olympics – great fun for those who go but does anyone really want to watch it?
They are awesome! however I do think they need to break through with more XGames sports- both summer and winter! Extreme sports- thats what the public wants to see!

How many years does the Summer Olympics happen compared to Winter Olympics?
My brothers and I are arguing about how many years the Winter Olympics happen compared to summer Olympics?
summer: 21 years
winter: 21
First summer olympics were held in 1896 at Athens Greece, every four years
Both Figure skating and Ice hockey were in the summer Olympics since 1908
First winter Olympics were held in 1924 at Chamonix, France
There were winter Olympics in 1996 and 1998
So that the summer and Winters are not in the same year

Have you noticed that the Olympic events w/ the most news coverage feature women's butts?
I think this is great 'cause I'm an assman, but is it a coincidence? or are television network executives all assmen?
uhh i havent noticed
Yes. Sex sells. Assman.
I've noticed bro…I've noticed.
I will not question it. I'm just going along with it!

i haven't noticed
i really haven't seen that but i see it when they show Misty-May Treanor and Kerri Walsh for some reason they do that i see
Thats the way it is every Olympics. did I mention I LOVE the Olympics?
No, I think that it's just cause the Olympic athletes are in great condition to begin with. there are no bad Olympic butts.
No its not all about the behind, its just your perspective , the camerman may focus on a certain angle for a long time and you get into it.
…you mean like men's swimming? because every time I've walked past a television with the Olympics on, it's been men's swimming or men's gymnastics or men's wrestling or men's-….
You get the idea.
dude, WHAT kind of man ISN'T an assmen?
It's definitely the ones that show the most skin.
You noticed that too, eh?
Yes, and its awesome, those volleyball girls are Pereety nice! Even George Bush was having a hard time keeping his hands off of their well formed buttocks, if you have seen those pictures.
ha ha..yeah true…swimming, beach volley ball, gymanstics…you name it…watever be the event,,,Butts and Breasts are focussed!!lol…good for us!
I think that more guys will watch cause of that reason.
Beach volleyball, gymnastics, diving, basketball.
But like you i dont mind.
would you rather it be mens butts?
I've been watching their asses all day long bro. I just love watching women's volleyball
would you pay more attention if they were showing feet?
Hmm… the Olympics I watched last night I saw MEN's diving, MEN's gymnastics, MEN's swimming, a tiny bit of woman's swimming and women's volleyball. I think the television executives must all be gay. I ain't complaining though. I think it's great too.

Today in 1924: The First Winter Olympics
With the 2010 Winter Olympics set to begin in Vancouver, Canada, next month, the thrill of snowbound competition is starting to build around the globe. There’s nothing quite like snuggling up warm and cozy with a mug of hot cocoa on a cold night to watch other people exhaust themselves figure skating and ski jumping in the frigid outdoors.
Today marks a special moment in the history of Winter Olympics — come to the think of it, the special moment — the anniversary of the first ever winter games. Today in 1924, spectators gathered in Chamonix in the French Alps for the inaugural “International Winter Sports Week.”
The week featured 14 events covering six sports, including the adventurous ski jump and the bobsled, according to the History Channel. the games were renamed the Olympics in 1928 when the International Olympic Committee dubbed the games taking place in St. Moritz, Switzerland, “the second Winter Olympics.”
The first Winter Games didn’t include nearly so many countries as they do today, and the competition was dominated by Scandinavians, Americans and Canadians. here are some fun factoids:
- Scandinavians swept everything having to do with speed, both in rinks and on slopes — Norway’s 17 medals made it the winner of the unofficial team competition.
- The United States placed third, claiming a sole gold medal in the 500-meter speed skating.
- Canada, predictably, won gold in hockey with 110 goals and only allowing three goals against them in five games.
- The 1924 Games had 300 athletes, but of those only 13 were women, who were limited to figure skating.
We’ve come a long way, both in terms of the number of countries that are racking up the awards (see progress through the years on this cool map), the number of athletes competing (over 5,000 expected), and the extent of women’s participation. I can’t wait to see what this year will bring.
