If you know what is going on with those players in their personal lives and in their professional lives, you might be able to use that information to get the players to make mistakes. Chiding a player about a tournament they just lost or getting them to talk about a particularly emotional moment in their life is the same as taking their attention off their game and placing it somewhere where it can not hurt you. If you can do this to a player then you automatically gain an advantage over them and if that is not a persuasive argument in favor of following the news, nothing is.

Whether you actually end up following the poker news or not, at the very minimum you should be paying attention to what is going on in the professional world of poker. If you do not do this at a minimum, you are really missing out.
