20,000 barrels of beer on the wall

REDLANDS – Hangar 24 Craft Brewery’s new distribution center will be key to the young enterprise’s plans to expand its sales to Los Angeles County and beyond, founder Ben Cook said.

The brewery, which sold its first barrels of beer last week, has purchased a 22,000-square-foot warehouse in west Redlands. The building has more space than Hangar 24 needs to meet existing demand, but the 3-year-old brewery has already grown more quickly than expected.

“Things are going much, much better than we ever planned,” Cook said.

Cook declined to disclose the building’s purchase price or how many dollars the company makes in sales, but he said Hangar 24 is selling more beer.

Hangar 24, makers of Orange Wheat, Pale Ale and other offerings, sold about 1,100 barrels of beer during its first year in business, and increased its volume to roughly 10,000 barrels last year.

The beer traveled from Hangar 24′s brewery, across the street from Redlands Airport, to a Colton warehouse for storage. The brewery’s own drivers hauled the product to bars, restaurants and retailers in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The new distribution center – along with the planned expansion of Hangar 24′s brewery – will make it possible for the company to create and store enough beer to increase its footprint, Cook said. The company will no longer use the Colton site for storage.

He said he has closed deals with four distributors to enter the Los Angeles County and Palm Springs markets. Cook’s plans also include the High Desert region of San Bernardino County, the Central Coast, Arizona and Nevada.

Santa Fe Springs-based Triangle Distributing co. is one of Hangar 24′s new partners. Their agreement will make it possible for Hangar 24 to distribute its products in 22 cities between the Orange County line and downtown Los Angeles, said Emilio Ramirez, Triangle’s marketing administrator.

This year, Cook says he expects to sell 20,000 barrels of beer, and he expects a doubling in the brewery’s footprint to result in enough capacity to produce 40,000 to 50,000 barrels.

The ability to reach higher production targets is one of the most important challenges any craft brewer must surmount in order to break into new markets, said Paul Gatza, director of the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association, a trade group for craft breweries.

“Whenever they want to add a distributor, they have to make sure they have the capacity to do that,” Gatza said.

Hangar 24 enjoys a reputation as Redlands’ hometown brewery, and craft brewers can sometimes have a tough time entering new markets where craft beer aficionados are loyal to their own local brands, Gatza said.

He also said, however, that Hangar 24 has already aroused the curiosity of beer drinkers beyond the Inland Empire.

“Hangar 24, while they may be in a limited area, they have gotten the attention of people in the beer world,” Gatza said.

Hangar 24′s new warehouse will give enough room to not only store more of its own beer, but have space to keep other breweries’ offerings, Cook said.

“We don’t really see craft brewers as our competitors,” Cook said. “We see Bud, Miller, Coors and all those foreign companies as being there for the taking.”

Overall U.S. beer sales decreased 1 percent by volume in 2010, according to Brewers Association statistics.

Craft breweries produced nearly 10 million barrels, or about 5 percent of the beer sold in the United States last year.

Among the craft brewing segment, sales increased 11 percent by volume in 2010.

Hangar 24 is not the only San Bernardino County brewery where an expansion is in the works.

Upland’s Dale Bros. Brewery, producers of beers including Pomona Queen and California Black Beer, is at least four months from moving into a larger building about 300 yards away from its current home, said Andy Dale, the assistant brewer who is also in charge of marketing.

Dale Bros. sold about 800 barrels last year, and Dale said 99 percent of their products are sold and consumed in the West Valley.

New facilities will increase capacity by 120 percent, Dale said.

“That’s going to allow us to immediately double our capacity and we’re also going to be able to open a tasting room for the first time,” he said.

iHop Free Pancake Day 2010 | News

Some good news to report for all of you iHop lovers. the chain of restaurants will be having a free pancake day tomorrow where you can load up on those scrumptious creations. there is no need to rush to iHop in the morning either. the free pancakes will be available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. there are really no strings attached, all the chain is asking is that patrons make a donation to charity, specifically local children’s hospitals. this has been an ongoing event for iHop in recent years. It is estimated that they have raised nearly $5M over the years, and there is no end in sight. the number to beat this year is $1.3M, which seems very doable. while iHop could possibly make direct donations to the charities, the turnout would be nowhere near as large.

iHop, the abbreviated name for the International House of Pancakes has been in business since 1958, with it’s first location opening in Toluca Lake, California. since that time, the iHop empire has expanded to hundreds of locations. the company is headquartered in Glendale, CA. iHop reported profit in excess of $44.5M for the 2006 fiscal year. the chain seems to have received little backlash from the faltering economy.
