Rose drops career-high 42 on Spurs

“We feel when we rebound, defend, play unselfishly and have low turnovers, we can play with anybody,” coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Thibodeau had downplayed the contest as a statement game, but the Bulls reacted with emotion often when they pulled away late.

With the Bulls up 79-75 late in the third, Rose began a 13-3 run with back-to-back scores. by the time Ronnie Brewer and Taj Gibson powered home back-to-back dunks as the run extended into the fourth, the Bulls were hopping in celebration.

Seconds after the Bulls burned a timeout because Luol Deng had to crawl to the bench to catch his breath after taking a blow to his midsection, Deng buried a 3-pointer to keep the good times rolling.

Deng finished with 19 points and Kurt Thomas added a team-high nine rebounds as the Bulls enjoyed a huge 41-29 rebounding advantage.

“Teams know other teams in the league who are good,” Rose said after the morning shootaround. “We know the Spurs are a very good team. And you kind of get that respect around the league, even though with some media we’re under the radar. other players around the league know. That’s the fun thing about it.”

Rose scored 11 in the first, including a wicked crossover of Antonio McDyess and three-point play. but few shots Rose hit were bigger than late in the fourth.

Leading 99-85, the Bulls’ offense suddenly sputtered, allowing the Spurs to close within 99-90 on Tony Parker’s layup. Parker led the Spurs, who were finishing their ninth straight road game on their annual circus trip, with 26 points.

With 3 minutes, 21 seconds left, Rose swished home a rainbow jumper as the shot clock expired, causing Scottie Pippen to rise from his courtside seat and applaud as Rose ran past.
