You should try for the Sports Therapy degree. To become a sports medicine doctor you need to first graduate with a bachelor’s degree in almost any subject. Then you need to attend medical school and when it comes time to specialize you need to find a sports medicine degree program.
The short answer… it really doesn’t matter as long as you have the pre-requisites to get into the medical school to which apply.
I was originally a biology major, left undergrad, came back a couple of years later (long story) and went with Sports Med/Exercise Science. I sorta had the benefit of both. However, at this point in my career, I believe the Sports Med has helped me more – easy to say since I got into medical school!
The downside with a Bio degree is that, if you don’t get into medical school, the only thing you can really do is teach. Sports med gives you a couple of other options.
Becoming a Sports Med doc is another question all together. There are generally 2 different paths with different emphasis.
1) Ortho sports med – these guys are orthopedic surgeons and do a sports med fellowship. Keyword here is that they are surgeons. They just tend to focus more on athletes and athletic injuries.
2) Primary care (such as family medicine) Sports Med – do some type of primary care residency then do a fellowship in sports med. These guys do the same stuff but without surgery. However, their perspective is different. They focus more on tools other than surgery. In my opinion, this is the best course of therapy initially in many cases. They often work closely with the ortho guys.
I hope that helps a little!
Most physicians in Sports Medicine are Orthopedic Surgeons. College, Medical School, and Residency in General Surgery then Orthopedics. The first answer is incorrect. You are not a “doctor” with a BS- you are a trainer. BIG difference.
